Not dealer only, you can get one on ebay. Remember if you arm the alarm and open the door with the key you'll only have a few seconds to get the key in the ignition before the alarm goes off.

I have the same question. I bought a 2001 White WS6 over the weekend and didn't get a remote. The dealer claims he doesn't have one, but I think thats crap because the car has the headlight gear issue that occurs when you turn on and off the lights as well when you use the remote . Not a big deal as i got a good deal on it, but I need a remote.

Can I buy one off of ebay and then bring it into a GM dealer for reprogramming?
Can i buy one off of ebay and have the seller reprogram it based off of my Vin, make, model?

Open the remote and it tells you how to program it inside. It's easy.

Problem is that I don't have an original remote to program the new one with. All the instructions I've read say that you need another synched remote to program the new one.

Any Ideas?

No, you program it with the car, not the old remote I believe.

Is that to reset a remote or to reprogram a remote? I think that is only to reset it. i need to program a new one remote without having another existing remote to program it, but if that's all that it takes, then what stops some one from buying an ebay remote and walking up to a gm car to do that trick to sync the remotes.

The instructions I have to program a new remote are ones I found on here. Sorry for not giving credit to the original poster, but I don't have that info.

Have each transmitter you intend to match ready for the
next steps. To match transmitters to your vehicle:
1. Turn the ignition to RUN, then to OFF. This
will disarm the Vehicle and Contennow ready to match the vehicle.
2. Remove the RADIO fuse. This fuse is located in the
main fuse block which is located on the left side of
your main instrument panel. When the fuse block is
open the radio fuse is located on the lower right hand
corner of your instrument panel.
3. Turn the ignition from OFF to RUN three times
quickly (within five seconds). The vehicle will
respond by locking the doors, unlocking the driver’s
doors and releasing the hatch. Your transmitter is
now ready to match the vehicle.
4. Press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on
the first transmitter for 15 seconds. The vehicle will
respond as in Step 3.
5. Repeat Step 4 for the remaining transmitters.
6. When you have finished matching all of your
7. Check that all transmitters work by pressing
transmitters, replace the RADIO fuse.

Have the dealer lookup the correct remote part # for your VIN then buy the right one on ebay for $20. That's what I did.
