buying a high mileage Camaro SS
I'd like to start out with Hi because im new to this forum. So i currently own a 1996 Impala SS with 93,000 miles and ive had it for so long and im looking for a change. So i put it on craigslist and someone offered me a 2000 camaro SS with 172,000 miles on it. The car is beautiful in and out. But has a lot of miles. The transmission was rebuilt and a shift kit added in the auto. new water pump, new power steering pump, new alternator, new battery, new fuel pump and new a/c condensor that will freeze your *** off. PLus other stuff i forgot. The car doesnt show any obvious signs of oil leaks or any other fluids, and idles fine. Now if it wasnt for the high miles i would have gotten it in a heart beat. But my question is how are these cars with high miles? Ive seen my LT1's with 150,000 being sprayed with a 150 shot all day long. Should i be worried or can i confidently trade my car for the SS and drive it normally with no worries? Thanks for your advice.

Yeah, but you have no idea what its gone through...that may be a problem. I personally wouldn't go for it as there are so many lower mileage cars around especially bc of the economy.

I have a 02 SS with 133,000 miles on it. I bought mine with intentions as a daily driver. I'm a college student and although I would rather have a lower mileage car I couldn't afford the prices on them. The car I bought runs great! So far I am completely confident my car will last many miles to come....

If it checks out with a mechanic it might not be a bad deal.
My only hang up is that the Impala is more rare (from what I ahve seen). Finding a clean one is much harder than finding a Camaro SS. I would be tempted to hang on to the Impala SS. I know you want something different though.
Have you looked up blue book value on each vehicle to get a comparison?

As for low mile cars being better... not at all, just depends if you carfax it and have an independant mchanic check it out, i bought mine with 50k miles and the rear end broke 3 weeks after i got it, then the trans went about a month and a half later. now I will never sell the car but just make sure it is checked out, I didn't care because she is a rare option Z28 and I wanted to make sure she had a good home after coming from an obviously abusive second owner (it was at an auction lot for like 2 years original owner put 16k miles on it in 6 years) I got her from a stealership that had just bought it off the auction lot and i then bought it for $8k.
If you want a reliable every day car, take it to a mechanic and have it checked out, unless they let you do a compression test right there, and since you have to pull the spark plugs out to do a comp test you can check the plugs for oil or inconsitencies. pull the dip stick, check the trans fluid. All that can help you determine the shape of the vehicle and its maintenance.

well the car is a daily driver right now. The current owner drives roughly 200 to 250 highway miles a week. Mostly everything has been replaced with new acdelco parts. Tranny was rebuilt (he showed me the receipt). Only thing left is basically a new rear and a new motor. After that its a brand new bada$$ camaro SS. So later on down the road ill just rebuild the motor and add an eaton posi wit 3.73 . YEa and i do need to check the carfax history

I have an SS with 160k miles. It drives great. Runs 13.5s with a lid/muffler delete and 12.0s with a 100 shot. Stock auto/converter/engine/exhaust. If the car runs good and checks out I would not hessitate at all. Maintinence is key
