Default 99 Camaro SS vs. 99 Mustang GT Vert-Who would win in autocross?

Alright guys, me and my friend have been going back and forth over this. I have a 99 Camaro SS SLP with LT headers, catted y pipe, loudmouth, tune. My friend has a 99 Mustang GT Convertible with a catted x pipe, borla catback, and tune. He says once he gets lowering springs and new struts that he would have a "full autocross suspension". He says his mustang GT would beat my camaro SS in autocross. I think not. What do you guys think?

well if yours is stock then it will have a ton of body roll.

springs and struts would not be "full autocross suspension" tires and sway bars play a bigger factor.

but when it comes down to it then it will be who is the better driver between you both. from what i have seen at the autocrosses around here those cars run pretty close to each other, but that could only be because of the driver.

SS > any Stang Vert, even with T-tops. Just saying, the flex in that Vert and the weight will kill that GT.

p.s. There are a million different setup "what ifs" but as it stands, the SS should win. Put the same driver in each car and I'm sure the truth will come out!

Two very valid points.

Driver ability can make up for some vehicle deficiency.
It will also depend on the course design.
Short course or long (tight vs more open?)

Being a former tactical driving instructor, and having auto-x'd a 2000 Z28 vert with some minor suspension mods, I have to agree that stock, the F-body is big and without some mods,, will roll like a ship in swells.
99 was the last year for factory koni adjustable shocks, a larger sway bar and HD leaf springs, so you may be a bit better off than some others.

The comps on the 2 are:

Mustang GT convertible:
lgth- 183.2
wheelbase- 101.3
width- 73.1
height- 53.2
weight- 3422-3477

99 Camaro coupe:
193.2
101.1
74.1
51.3
3306#

The Camaro is 10" longer (size does matter ) but 100+ lbs lighter than the Mustang in stock trim.
They're about tit for tat everywhere else, but as stated, as a convertible, is heavier too.

The only way to know for sure, is use the same driver for each, on the same course, and see how it pans out.

Autocross favors light weight and short wheelbase.
There isn't enough difference to matter. However
there is a lot more acceleration in your pocket if
you can keep it pointed right.

The other thing about autocross is once you start
touching hardware you can end up in another class
with people much smarter and richer than you. So
tell him to go bring that knife to the gunfight.
