Default Best exhaust for ls1

I have an 02 z28, and I'm looking for a cat back exhaust. I want something that sounds good but isn't extremely loud. I started looking at the loudmouth 2, but it sounds like there is a lot of drone while cruising. Right now I'm leaning towards The flowmaster American thunder. Any opinions? Feel free to mention other brands, my budget is about 450 at most

Welcome to the forums a magnaflow is pretty close to your price range and sounds damm nice on a stock car I'd pass on the blowmaster. You need to listen and figure out which one you like the best. It's all in personal preference.
Asking for the best exhaust is kinda like asking who makes the best rubbers

I'd pass on Flowmaster as well, unless you're absolutely in love with that "Flowmaster" sound...

Magnaflow is a good choice. A used cat back is also an option. SLP Power Flo or Borla adjustable can be had around your price range, used.

You'll get a bunch of different opinions on exhaust systems as it comes down to personal preference. I can tell you the LM2 only drones around 2k rpm under a load, other than that I think it's a great choice for a stock LS1.

That's pretty funny.
I ran with full exhaust and with it dropped at the collectors... Only about .2 difference.
I've always heard this about FM's, but no idea where it came from.

When you look up any lab tests that rate flow capacity of mufflers, Flowmaster is regularly near or at the bottom. It's been a while since I've read one, but I remember a 2.5" inlet/outlet Borla XR-1 could outflow a 4" inlet/outlet 2-chamber Flowmaster.

Personally, I just don't like the chambered "Flowmaster" sound all that much.

That's fine...Just hard for me to compare a straight through design to a chambered muffler.

The best exhaust for the LS1 is Long Tube Headers, Off-Road Y-pipe, to stock Catback... then install an electric cutout after the the Y-Pipe.

This will give you a throaty yet subdued exhaust when cruising around or daily driving and when you want to get rowdy open the cutout.

If you just want to go the catback route you have a lot of options I would personally go SLP LM2 or Borla.

Good Luck!

I'm running Kooks Longtubes, Kooks Catless Y, Magnaflow muffler...I personally do not like the sound at all. A lot of pinging sounds when coming back down in the RPMs, not very "clean" sounding to me like an LS should sound. This set up was on the car when I purchased, I will be switching from the Y to true duals very soon...haven't decided between Borla or Corsa mufflers though, may just run with none for a while and see how it sounds. Very helpful site though.

Thumbs up

I'm running on3performance catback, similar to Loudmouth catback. But easier on the wallet. I love the sound and does drone @ 2k. It still turns heads driving down the street. Like the above comments, its really your preference on sound and performance. Anything is still better than the stock catback. IMO

IHey everyone. I've got a '99 Z28 M6 and I was wondering relpacing the factory muffler is an option? I like the look of the factory tips and everything is still rock solid. I'd use that as a starting point, then buy LT's and a y-pipe.
