Default LT1 with A4 and 2.73s (WHY)?

Hello all, I just purchased a 97 Z28 LT1 with a 4L60E and 2:73 gears. Can anyone tell me why GM would put this combo in a Z28? I remember back in the late ninety's gas was cheap so I wouldn't think GM used this combo for gas mileage reasons, especially in a Z28?!

Smile

mileage and cost would be my guess.

plus GM could charge for an optional upgrade if desired.

2.73s imo did suck in stock form.

and thats a nice looking car btw.

Not much actual difference in 1/4 mile performance between the 3.23s and 2.73s. You'd need to jump up to a 3.73 to realize any significant ET reduction. Better yet, go with an optimal stall speed for your combo and there will be no more than about 1-2 tenths of ET difference between 2.73s and 3.73s.

I've had two of these cars stock with 3.23s and two with 2.73s, frankly there wasn't any drastic difference IMO; the 2.73s do feel a bit weaker off the line but not excessively so in my experience. In fact, at certain points the 2.73s will feel quicker as they will allow for a WOT downshift to 1st gear at higher speeds than 3.23s.
