Default high mileage LT1s

i found a 95Z A4 w/ t tops for 3500 obo in my area. as i'm 17, that's a perfect price

i haven't looked at the pics yet but it's got 160k miles and supposedly runs well

at what mileage do these cars start being a problem if they're driven daily?

i know an engine and tranny swap/rebuild would be coming up at 160k miles, but are these cars problematic after this type of mileage?

thanks

As long as regular maintenance is performed on these engines I know plently of guys w/ 9c1s getting close to 300k on the original engine. . Many guys that I've talked to have torn down 160k blocks and noted that a majority of the factory crosshatch is still in the cylinder walls.

I'm rebuilding my engine now, mainly because I just needed more power. But it had 145k on the engine. I had the car for only 20k miles and I always did my oil changes, etc., etc. I don't really know for sure how good the guy before took care of it but I had some records. But my crank didn't ware .001 and the cylinder only had like .001 of ware. Other than that stuff like Opti-skarp, water pump, intake are common but can be fixed without a rebuild. The A4 with probably go before the engine, but that's just a reason to beef it up alittle.

LT1's are workhorses.. mileage does not seem to affect it if it has been taken care of...

Seriously. My 168k mile motor is in way better shape than my 26k mile motor. I mean waaaay better shape. One was taken care of (regular oil changes, synth oil, warmed up before beaten on etc.) and one was not.
Small block chevy's will go forever if you take care of them.

As already said, as long as they are taken care of lt1s can last for a very long time. If it was well mantained and not beaten on too hard, you can expect well over 200k miles easily. You should be able to tell when you test drive it, if it still runs really strong and smooth without knocking, ect. at 160k miles, it was most likely well kept. (best thing to do, if you can, is drive an lt1 with lower millage that you know was taken care of, then drive this one and compare)

The LT1 will outlast the rest of the car, engine wear is not the problem it once was, due to many things from machining and material advances to better oil and VERY importantly the precision engine controls. A choked carb fed way too much fuel and atomized it poorly the result was washing the oil film off the cylinder walls and causing exess wear, not an issue with injection.

The engine should be fine as well as the rest of the car as long as its been maintained. Mine has 165k on it...original engine, trans, etc. Doesnt burn a drop of oil and the car hasnt really given me any issues in almost 2 years. These cars can have problems though, I went through the waterpump/optispark combo a few years back. Not exactly fun, but seeing how well the cars held up I guess I cant complain.

For $3500 though, I would think that you might be able to come across one with less mileage. Of course depending on the condition of the car it may be worth it.

They're out there. I picked my 94 formula up for $3500 with 128k on it. No body rust, very light underbody rust. (salt belt)

Keep looking you'll find one

Where are you located? I found a LT1 Z28 in the Montgomery, AL area. Black/gray interior. Dunno the price but it looked in okay shape from the road, I'll go look seriously if your interested though.

I got my formula with 64,800 miles on it and it now has almost 148,000 on her and she runs great! Just take care of the car and it will take care of you. I have changed the oil regularly, even the tranny fluid and the filter recently, I'm told you don't need to change the tranny filter but I did anyway, want to keep my tranny for a bit longer. Even changed out valve cover gaskets as they tend to leak sometimes, car doesn't use oil, had to covert over to an elec. water pump as the stock one almost blew up on me, and of course I'm on my 3rd opti CRAP! I need to convert over to the del tech system.

My dad got over 300,000 miles out of his LT1 in his 95 Impala SS, so these LT1's are here to stay. I'm a believer in the LT1, its a work horse.

got 90777 miles on her. i changed my oil every 1500 miles, might think of even putting royal purple. have had every problem that was listed in carpoint.com, no surprises (optispark, starter, etc.)

wait, no, their were a couple surprises. when my clutch was slipping badly, i could still drive it around for about 500 miles, until i got off my *** and got it fixed. and when the waterpump failed, the motor still didnt fail me. so i was surprised that even with one good leg, she still hauled my fat ***.

I'm looking for a ~$75 M6 LT1 but have found absolutely NO luck here up north from most of you guys. A4s are a dime a dozen, but I haven't come across one M6 that's worthy... yet.

Yea, A4's are real common up here, but M6's are another story. Thats why when I saw my M6 in the paper, totally stock, in absolute mint condition w/ 40,047 miles for $7500 and just 4 miles away from my house I made sure to not let it get away and bought it the day after I test drove it. Even though $7500 is a bit pricey for a 94 lt1, I didnt think twice about it because it looked like it was just driven off the showroom floor, very well taken care of. I was very close to "settling" for an A4. Glad I didn't though and by the looks of it I got lucky, havent seen anther low millage/good condition M6 anywhere in upstate ny since.

Don't worry man you'll find one, if I can find one in the syracuse/albany area, you'll definatly find one in jersey. Auto's are fine, but an M6 is just so much more fun IMO.
