Default Tracking down a specific 1st Gen

Okay, so back in the 70's my father owned a '69 SS Camaro, that he sold when he got married in '76. I've thrown around the idea of tracking it down and buying it back for him, but I'm not sure what resources are available to try and do something like that. I don't have the VIN number of the car, but I do have the license plate number it was registered under in '74 under his name. He's tried calling his insurance company, we're still with the same one, but they don't keep records back that far. My only other thought is to call up the DMV and see if they would either be able to match his drivers license number to the car he was registered on during that time, or if they could match the VIN number to the license plate.
Any thoughts on the best course of action? Anyone tried tracking down a specific car before? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Default

check out some Camaro boards more specific to earlier models. I've had good luck here: www.camaros.net
