Default 6L80 mate to big block?

hey guys....i have a very big what if question. is it possible to mate a new 6l80 trans to BBC? i currently have an 81 trans am with a 427 and was wondering if it is possible. the car is currently backed by a built th350 and id like to get an overdrive tranny and had been looking into a 700r4, but the idea of a 6 speed is kind of cool and would be different.

it would be going into an 81 TA, full weight w/ big block (think 3800 roughly) with 3.08 gears. gas mileage isnt the main concern but is a plus.

is it reasonable? i know virtually nothing about the 6l80...can it be used in an old school way like the 700r4/4l60-80?

It will bolt right up but there is no way to control IE shift it. I have heard of stand alone controllers in the works but not seen anything yet!

And you'll need a controller for it also but they are available. Its like a Th400 with an overdrive.

Yes, of course you will need a controller, but that transmission is well documented and there are multiple, fully programmable controllers available. You can even set it up with a peddle shifter:

This would be a great swap!

A 6L80 or 6L90 would pretty well bolt up, but you would need to convert the BBC to GenIV or MAST Motorsports EFI to help run the trans.

The embedded (the controller is part of the valve body/solenoid assembly) controller in the trans works in tandem with the ECM's in late model GM vehicles to do it's stuff.

Maybe something stand alone available in the aftermarket sometime soon.......

Have a good weekend!
