Keep in mind, the water temp sender in the head is for the PCM. If you need a sender for a gauge, you will need to install one in the other cylinder head, or I think you can use a sensor from a 98 LS1, which had 3 wires, two for the PCM, 1 for a gauge. - can anyone confirm this??

Oil sender goes to the instrument cluster in 99-02 or so, and 03+ the oil pressure sender goes to PCM also.

Yep the 98 had a 3 wire sender, 2 for the pcm and the 3rd goes direct to the gauge.

I have a Dakota Digital dash in mine. For the oil pressure, you can buy a kit at O'reilly Auto Parts or probably ANY auto parts store that has brass fittings to convert the thread on the engine to the 1/8 pipe thread on your Dakota digital sending unit. For the temperature guage, just go to their web-site and order the 12 MM sending unit and screw it in to the head on the rear pass. side or front driver side if your using a carb as I am. No adaptors are necessary. I would check with Dakota Digital before I tried connecting either one to a factory sender. If you really need the photos, PM me and I'll see if I can find em' for you. If you install another one in the other Head, it will give you a false reading..way hotter than it should be.

I am using the 1998 3-Wire in my setup without a problem, works very well.

Could you point me towards somewhere where I could get one of the 3 wire senders.....I'm in the UK, so mail order would be great.

Thanks

I would get ahold of a GM parts store online and see if they could send you it. GM part # 12551708.

I just had to ask. WHY, would it give a false reading...hotter than it should be. Curious.....is all.

Heat soak being where it is on the back side of the Engine, and being at the back of the Heads it gets pretty toasty back there. The Sensor itself gets hot and messes with the reading.

I've tried it and I found it to be true.

Was that on your 95 camaro swap that the temp sensor gets heat soaked?

I have my temp sensor at the back of the pass head and mine has always been accurate, but I have a bit more airflow around my motor than you would. That 4th gen engine bay is pretty tight.

Yea, that was on my car, and I read that other people have the same problems with a tight Engine Compartment.

I switched the the 3-Wire when I had the time to get it done, and it workes without a problem.

Getting ready to do a swap with an 08 5.3.

Will I need to run two oil pressure senders and this 3 wire water temp sender? Why couldn't the gauge and PCM share the same sensor?

Thanks!

^^Get you an Oil Pressure Sensor that you can plug the single Wire Connector into and run that to the Gauge.

I would run the 3-Wire Temp Sensor. The Gauges and the PCM share the same signal, well in a way. What happens is the signals go to the PCM, then get sent to the Gauges on the Serial Data Wire. That signal is broken down by the BCM in the Gauges(for 03 and up I assume the Oil Pressure is incrporated into that signal from what was posted above). For the 1998 and back Analog Gauges, each wire ran to the Gauges without a problem.

I don't plan on using the 08 gauges - I plan on using Autometer gauges with the swap. I'm putting the 5.3/4.60e/harness/pcm/tac into a Jeep Wrangler.

I just went and opened the gauges and they both came with their own sensors. So I guess my question was kind of moot... I'll go back and re-read, but I'll still ask now - where should I put the sensors that came with the gauges and do I need sensors for the PCM as well? If so, can I run the PCM off the new sensors?

I guess I'm asking if the PCM is required to have access to water/oil info. Water I can see for AFR, but oil pressure?

Thanks... I hope I'm not hijacking this thread and just adding to it...?

ok, i ran into the same problem w/ the pass side head. on this https://ls1tech.com/forums/conversio...-5-3-what.html

efilive/ the computer was reading 210 on the driver side head/factory temp sending unit. but the pass side head/autometer gauge is reading 250.eek............ neither side feels hotter than the other.

the merv--do you have a part# for the pigtail for the 3-wire sensor?

alos what wire will go tto the computer and which goes to the aftermarket gauge?
