Default Dimensions of M96 3.2 L

I measured the engine/bay yesterday, and although I don't see a way to make the LS1 fit, I'm posting these numbers up anyway in case anyone else wants to try something. These dimensions are for a 2000 Boxster S, so M96 3.2L engine.

Front of crank pulley to face of bellhousing: 20"
Overall width from coil packs to coil packs: 35"
Overall height from sump to top of intake manifold: 24"
Distance from sump to center of crank: 10"

Someone asked about moving the gearbox back. There is actually plenty of room (4"+) to move the gearbox backward and still not have the axles touch the suspension members. However, this would require longer axles and give you a poorer geometry.

In short, the M96 is really, really short front-to-back, but also really, really wide. At 24" overall height, it is not very tall.

So for a V8 swap, there is one suitable candidate that may even bolt up to the existing Getrag: the Audi 4.2L V8. Depending on the year (and who was taking the measurements), this engine is around 20" long, 29" wide, and 24" tall. It came with anywhere from 300 to 340 hp in A8 trim... quite a bit more hp if you get the expensive S4/6/8 or RS4 versions. Just stating the obvious: the Audi engine has a much smaller aftermarket (aftermarket main bearings are not even available), so it seems to be considered a throwaway engine. Anyway, since this is an LS1 forum, I'll leave it at that.

any news or updates on this project?

if it was up to me i would not worry as much about the cv axles ; if they are the 930 style/design , you can have them run at up to 21 deg. if i remeber correctly .

just look at the angles and loads sand rails run .

furthermore , are you limited in space on the whole front of the engine or just the upper part of the engine ( i.e. is the "firewall" slanted) ?
if it is have you looked into a remote waterpump setup? that way you run the crank and alternator on the bottom side and delete the original water pump and gain a few inches of space.

here are the adapter plates to use fittings on :

and a closer pic :

( you can see more in this thread : https://ls1tech.com/forums/drag-raci...ld-thread.html )

and to save a bit more space don't use a npt to AN adapter then a 90 deg An hose end,,,, just get a 90 deg. NPT to AN hose end or a 90 deg NPT to AN fitting then use a straight AN hose end .

Hope this helps

Here a tip, look at the photo's remember the Boxster has an Audi based transaxle which is different from other Porsches. Once the Audi trans is bolted to a LS motor via and adaptor the drive shafts are to low. You then have to raise the engine for the correct angle. With the Boxster there isn't much height in the engine bay. A Porsche trans would be needed and flipped to work. Now the adaptors for late model Porsche boxers gets very expensive. Check the GT40 or Ultima site for pic's and info. But with Dirty Z remote water pump idea, fit and old school 930 4 speed flipped (Check the Torque these can take) This would be an awesome conversion with a C5 Corvette sump etc............

Isn't there a Boxster finished with an LS1 I remember a build going on somewhere????

That car is not LSx powered. It's an Audi V8.

Default Have you thought about a Subaru swap?

6 cylinder Subaru with some boost should work out real nice, and be fairly easy and the engine is smaller than the Porsche. I am doing this swap on my 914 (2.5 four now going to the six later.)

The Audi V8 is nice because it bolts up to the Boxster trans. It's not so nice if you want more power ($$$) and it's not rebuild-able, you buy a new engine.

The shorter rods on the 4.8 are used to keep the compression height on the pistons the same as for a 5.3/5.7. There is no need to get custom pistons the stock parts are designed to work - 4.8 and 5.3 pistons are interchangeable from the factory.

Destroking an LS is just dumb. Even the longest stroke stock crank (the LS7 427ci 4" stroke) doesn't push the average piston speed over the critical 5000 fps until above 8000 rpm.

4.8L rods are longer. 6.276 to all other LSX motors 6.098.

Should anyone come back to this thread for research, I'll give my $.02. I'm building a Corvair rear engine LS4. I went with that motor because the water pump and low cost all aluminum engine. The routing for the serpentine belt is crazy, so came to this conclusion.

Remove the impeller, block it off and run an electric water pump. Personaly, I think that LS4 WP housing is the thinnest you're gonna get...period. By the time you use Moroso Adapters with elbows, it's still going to take more room, and be a more complex setup.

Now, the transverse LS4 to a 4L65E (heavily rebuilt) wouldn't be a bad idea at all. At the Fiero sites, there's a handful using the G6 trans to the LS4 but a custom starter mounting needs to be configured. There's a guy on the Corvair site building a 3.8L supercharged Corvair and still able to keep the back seat.

Ok, well, thats all I got. Yeah and LS Boxster would be cool.

Derp I was thinking a 400 sbc. The 4.8 rods are longer not shorter but gm did that to keep the compression height on the pistons the same.

Anything NEW on this LS in a Box?

Renegade has stuffed an LS7 in their Boxster S. Has anyone else done this with a reasonable sized 5.3L LS? Or even a LS4? I was looking at LQ4/9 truck engines and they still weigh less than the 3.2L (500+ lbs.) 6 banger.

There is plenty of room toward the back of the tranny as DirtyZ suggested. Don't mind losing an inch or two or passenger room…I have a hacksaw and am not afraid to use it! As it is, my garage has a HUGE Boxster paperweight that needs to be burning up the street and carving some turns.

Was wondering IF anyone had any NEW IDEAS? Talk amongst yourselves.

Thanks!
