Default What do I need to do to get my fuel system ready? It's been sitting for 7 years!

I have a 1985 XJ6 that has been sitting for about 7 years. The last 4 years have been in a heated garage. It has 2 tanks, 2 inline pumps mounted in the trunk, 1 electric valve to toggle between tanks, and a set of fuel lines (feed and return) running up to the engine compartment. It is a high-pressure fuel injection system. The tanks have old gas in them. I now know I should have drained the tanks, but I didn't.

I would consider bypassing that electric valve and running from just one tank. I would like to keep the existing factory fuel lines that run under the car.

What do I need to do to get the fuel system in order and ready for my LS1?

Thanks, -Dave

run the pump and empty the tank, fill with new fuel, then change out the fuel filters and flush the lines

After I drain the tank, do I need to flush the system with some sort of cleaner or just regular gas?

You flush the tank, lines, etc.. BEFORE you power up the pump[s].
NO POINT in pumping all that $hit thru your pumps.

Find an ethanol blend fuel. It is a better solvent then straight gas.

Plan on changing the fuel filter regularly.

Can you even get straight gas in the winter? I know NJ sneaks as much ethanol into fuel as possible.

I vote to drain the tanks without using the pumps too.

So regular gas is all I need to run through? I don't need some kind of solvent to get rid of the varnish, etc?

Does the gas smell like turpentine? If not, you can get away w/ a gas flush only. If so, I'd call a local chemical company or an experienced racer & ask what's best to flush with. Agreed, don't run the old gas through the pumps.
