Default fried fuel pump relay?

I was cruising down the street and all of a sudden my fuel pump died with no warning. Turned out that the terminal on the relay had gotten so hot that it melted the plastic around it and was no longer carrying voltage to the pump. What would cause this to happen? I checked for a short and could not find one. I replaced the relay and the melted plug and have driven about 300 miles with no problems...Any ideas?

Don't know for sure without checking it, but 9 times out of 10 that kind of damage is caused by a loose or bad connection right at the point of damage. The loose connection results in high resistance right there, which generates heat. It becomes a viscious circle of higher resistance / more heat, until something gives way or burns up. If the connection is properly repaired you should have no more trouble.

That leaves a 1 in 10 chance that something else is intermittently shorting or causing high current draw, but I doubt it.
