So I've been doing a lot of planning for my FC swap... When it comes to exhaust I know the type of sound I want but not sure what style of muffler makes it.

The best example I can give is Infinity/Nissan and Older Ferrari. Throaty and burbly rather than rumbling and thumping. A G35 or 350Z is quiet until you get into it then it rips!

Any one know how to get those characteristics out of aftermarket exhaust? I know for sure I want really sleeper quiet but enough that I can hear it when I accelerate.

By default I'm looking at 3" duals, X pipe and dually magnaflow cans at about 18" long and 8 diameter or oval even to get the most volume tucked in there. The 3" pipe is dictated by the LS7 manifolds and head pipes I'm using. Cats intact.

I almost wondering if it will be too quiet with cats, x-pipe and mufflers though. Then again it's 3" hahaha

I love the sound of the 350z/g35. i've heard that the borla system for the 350z makes it even sweeter - quiet at idle yet sounds like a som'bitch @ wot. i test-drove a g37s when they first came out, and they absolutely nailed the perfect exhaust note (at least for a stock v6).

that being said, the harmonics of a v8 are much different than those of a v6, so the exhaust note will be different (and better, imo).

I do know a V6 sounds different but I believe I can get the same character or note but with the sweeter V8 rhythm. I agree with you on that.

I'm not familiar with the Nissan/Infinity bit, but I was looking for a similar (exotic?) sound for my LS1 Chevelle I'm building. What I was looking for was a smooth but throaty sound. Rule #1 is that the sound can't be "poppy" like the SLP Loud Mouth and many others currently on the market for LS-powered F-body cars. Personally, that raspy sound reminds me of a 30-year old grain truck in need of a new muffler.

After a lot of comparing, I ended up buying a couple of "turbo-style" mufflers from SLP (these mufflers are completely different from the Loud Mouth mufflers). They were built as part of an aftermarket exhaust system for a full-size Chevy truck, and I was able to get them on clearance from SLP. Here's a sample of what I'm hoping they'll resemble once I get everything put together:

You and I see it the same way on all points, I think it may be a bit of a challenge for me to package though. I looked at the mufflers on SLP site, thanks for the hint. I have room for an 8" round by about 20" long or an oval 8" in my little Mazda.

I don't want it to sound like a truck, and I outlived my racer boy days lol! Seems like an x-pipe will help mellow the sound, the only mufflers in that size range I've found so far are Magnaflow. I may have to bite the bullet and take a risk.

Lurk, if you really want to give your LS the sound of a Ferrari or other exotic V8, try "180 degree headers".

They take extra space over/under the engine and look like a "bundle of snakes" but they give you the "formula 1" sound instead of the NASCAR sound.

If you're tight on room, the SLP's would definitely be a challenge. They not small by any means. Here's a pic of the mufflers with the Pypes 2.5" stainless X-pipe I'll be using.

Your cam also has a lot to do with it. I too really don't like the sound of a retardedly poppy and loud LS that sounds like it's about to die.

Good point. I'll be running an LS7 cam in my L92. Should be near glass smooth and very little pop from overlap. Yeah, I really want this to sound smooth with a slight performance lope, maybe the better word is clean. Subtle on idle and cruise, aggressive when getn' it !

That Velle sounds surprisingly good. The Vette wheels were a bit of a shock at first! Not bad.

Damn Steve, that really does sound different. I can't get over it. It feels like an X pipe does some of this but in a sloppy way.

The sound I'm thinking of it to me sounds like a dog throwing a chest growl. Menacing but subtle.

I really like the 180 degree header sound, possibly with some nice mufflers tacked on behind to bring the volume down a bit. It seems like the low intake manifold and the lack of a distributor sitting on top of the engine might make the LSx engine a good candidate for the 180-degree crossover design. Schoenfeld Headers makes a 180 crossover for the old SBC, and they have a few different header options for LSx's, but not a 180 crossover.

I'd love to see pictures of the headers on that Vette.
