He probably doesn't like the idea of a Chevy engine/trans in a Ford car, he'll probably call blasphemy.

I say try and find that year mustang first, then understand that whatever premium you pay for a rust free early stang you will lose as soon as you put the GM engine in it.

Other than that don't be afraid to modify a mass produced consumer item like an old car. No one came down off a mountain with these things.

Those old mustangs had some pretty tight engine bays. How much work will it be to fit the larger LS motor?

Depends on how much you're spending on the stang body. Most people that put LS motor in stangs, do it, because foxbodies are cheaper then F-bodies and LS motors are cheaper to build then ford motors, so its a money thing. If you want to be totally differant, build a ford motor and put it in an F-body. I'm sure more people will hate then if you did it the other way around. My only question is why? If you're doing it to be differant, there are a lot of better choices. Like a Pacer wagon, tubbed and pro streeted, how many of them are around? If you already have the stang, then that a differant story, but since you're not set on the year, I don't think you do.

Well asside from you most likely being a man, you will run into a few issues with the earlier mustang coil/shock locations. You will need to cut and reweld these as an LS1 will not fit between them from what i have seen. I think somewhere aorund 66 or 67 the coil locations were widened to alower for larger engines than the 289 i think. I am not a Ford guy but i remember reading about the issues in first gen mustangs with swaping in other motors and i believe there is actually a thread around here about someone trying to do it in a 65 mustang. The LS1 wont fit between the shock towers.

I'm currently doing this to my 65' mustang. I have along way to go yet. I swapped over to a Mustang II front suspension for clearance. I bought a moroso oil pan for max clearance, though its still going to be tight.

The 67/8 might be a better choice if you don't want to hack out the original equipment. (Still not sure if it would fit) What I'm running into problems with right now is the T56 is too large and I have to cut out and redo the trans tunnel. Might be easier with an automatic trans.

YES,
may have to adapt some ls mounts into the kmember, unless the fox body swap mounts can be used, or have some custom made.
throw in a th350 with stall

I say do it if thats what you want, it's your car.

I got boycotted from the Olds community when I did the 6.0 swap in my Cutlass. Let people get all butt hurt, its your car, build it to your liking

Your car, your money. Do what you want. To hell with the rest. Make sure to post pics and threads about the install. Enjoy. A ford being powered by a Chevy powerplant, HELL YEAH!!!!

Have you considered a TKO? A good bit narrower than a T56 and my give you some additional choices in locating the shifter.

Does it have wheels?
Is it a boat?
Is it an airplane?
Does it hover?
Does it have tracks?

As long as it meets 1 of the above criteria I feel that it is a suitable LSx swap candidate

you do not need to cut the shock towers to install a ls engine in an early mustang. it fits as easily as a small block ford.

You have a 67....different shocktowers. Hell, you can fit a 4.6 DOHC motor in a 67+ with a little trimming, so an LSx is no sweat in those cars.

That said, I wonder how well an LSx fits in a 65-66 Mustang; I know they are similar in size to a SBF, and I've seen people try to do oddball engine swaps in early Mustangs and use headers that hit the shocktowers, then they turn around and spam the internet with "this engine doesn't fit in a Mustang" and refuse to consider the possibility that if they had used headers that fit, they wouldn't have had a problem. There are people out there who think you can't drop in a 351W without hacking the shocktowers because a W with stock manifolds won't fit...duh, they're not supposed to fit, there's a reason for the swap headers! I have to wonder if an LSx would fit, given the right headers??

Edit: Looks like a 4.6 DOHC is 26 5/8" wide, a 289 is 24" wide, and an LS1 is 24.75" wide. Should be no worse than dropping a 351W into a 65-66 Mustang as the W is 25" wide. With the right headers, it ought to plop in place with room to spare.

PS: Do it!! If I didn't already have a 93 Cobra motor for my Mustang, I'd be thinking about it.
