1964 Chevelle - 5.3 LQ4/4L60E
#64
Sorry about delays on this link guys. Been pretty busy doing a restoration on a '57 and when I do have time online, I always forget to check this post. The only pic I have currently of the oil pan is the one on page 2 of this thread. If I recall correctly the pic is of the front end with the bad front springs, I have since gained another 2 inches from swapping to new springs for a 65 big block w/ Air instead of what ever kind of springs were in the car in the first place (they werent even 64 Chevelle Springs.) If I have time tonight I will take pictures of both the oil pan clearance and the gas tank hang and post them.
The mods that I would like to do to the engine would be a torque converter swap and gear swap for the rear end, it is currently a 3.08 and is a dog out of the hole. Then do a mild cam swap, hoping with the three of those I can get back into the high 13's instead of this 14.9 quarter that im running now without sacraficing streetability.

obfpd172- Not sure if you are asking if I am from the STL area or not, but I am located in Central California. I did spend a semister at Lindenwood College back in 95 in St. Charles.
BCZEE-Awesome with the Nova. How far are you along? Yeah the 57 project is coming a long. Got the wiring harness in but not terminated everywhere yet, I have the Vintage A/C system to put in it, also a digital gauge set to install after I powder coat the gauge bezel, steering column is in with powersteering box. I wanna get the A/C system all setup so I can get the motor and trans dropped in so I can terminate the harness at the motor. The disc brakes have been installed, plummed them and installed the mastercylinder and vac booster.

Chief,
I used the LS1 steel tube exhaust manifolds from the Camaro. I dont plan to use aftermarket headers, as they are a little out of my budget for now. Maybe something to consider later.

New to site
I read most of the posts on this thread & came away wondering if you guys were aware of the model specific sites out there? Most of them now have LS conversion sections in them. Team Chevelle does not for some reason or if it does, I have not been able to find it. For Novas, stevesnovasite.com has an LS forum stuck in the "Drivetrain & Performance" area. For 55-7's, trifive.com has "LS Questions & Answers" in the "Hi Performance & Racing" section. Car Craft magazine did an LS swap into a '65 El Camino & that info can be found at their web site CarCraft.com. They also put out a magazine call "Engine Swaps" a few months back that has a lot of good info on LS swaps.
All of these places have extensive info on things like oil pans, exhaust, intakes & accessory drives. What does & does not work with what body style. You might have to do a little bit of snooping around in them to find what you need but, if someone else has already done some of the trial & error, why not use it? I am putting a 2006 GTO LS2 into my '57 Bel Air & kicking around the idea of picking up a 5.3 for my '70 El Camino. I found this thread snooping around for some info on that. And everything will not be identical between a '64 & a '70, but a lot of it will.
The GM Performance Parts site also has a lot of good options in it. I got the conversion oil pan for my '57 from them. And I learned from the Nova site that if I ever decide to put an LS into my Nova, the extra rear-sump GTO pan that I now have is the ticket for that conversion. Anyway, you get the idea. Hope that this helps someone out.

USMCNAM, Team chevelle does not have a designated forum portion to it, however ls1tech does have builds that have already been done on many of the years of A-bodies as well as with different drivetrains specs. If you scroll to the top left side of this page and click on the section where it says "Conversion and Hybrids" or click HERE to take you to a list of different years/engine swaps/trans swaps etc.

Thank you Chuck. I still have some items to refine, and some bolt on performance to take care of as well as a Vintage A/C setup and get rid of the Anemic OEM system, not to mention finding out what my issue is with the cruise control.

Old thread but are you talking about the oil pan clearence? I have a 65 Skylark with the Holley 302-1 oil pan and it works for me. They have come out with a 302-2 oil pan with even more clearance. I did not have to do anything special to my car. I also use the Dirty Dingo sliders to mount the motor to the frame. Worked out very well.

I have seen a 64 with a truck intake, but I think the top of the intake was cleaned up quite a bit in order to clear. I'm sure someone else will chime in with experience on the issue. You will indeed want to toss the truck oil pan. It hangs down too low in the A body cars.
I believe your power steering pump on the truck accessories will need to have a smaller pulley installed in order to clear the power steering box.
