Default 98 LS1 harness mod question, cam sensor plug?

Can anyone answer why there is a disconnect plug in the cam sensor wires at the front of the passenger side??? Is there some sort of diagnostic procedure that requires unplugging it on the 98's???

I am modifying the harness for standalone engine swap, and considering remove the plug and splicing the wires back together to clean things up.
