Default non-setback mounts in Nova = FAIL

so Ive spent the last three days getting my engine ready for installation into the car (1971 nova)

I finally got the engine bolted to the transmission and put it, and first thing I noticed is that the trans mount barely on the trans crossmember.the bolt holes dont come through to bolt the trans down to the crossmember.

the engine has enough space in the back to use the 1" setback mounts, which would also line up the trans mount to the crossmember perfectly.

now I dont have a heater core so I dont know if having it that far back would interfere with the heater stuff.

just letting you guys know.

anyone have a set of 1" setback mounts I can buy?

Thanks for the heads up. I am getting things ready for my LQ9 swap into my 72 Nova. I have not got mounts yet, so this helps.

What transmission? What crossm-member... stock or aftermarket swap kit? Do you have a build thread?

Should have done a search. I have posted a bunch of times that I used 1" setback plates and everything lines up perfect on my 3rd gen Nova.....factory trans crossmember and driveshave work great. Im using an AC delete box on my 3rd gen and although the head is close to the box, everything still works.

Yes, I would like more details on which plates and engine mounts (T/N or S/W) you used. What Trans mount did you use (4sp, auto TH350 or PG).

I will be doing my 71 Nova next year and have not really made my mind up as to what mounts.

Any pictures would be nice...

I used Moroso solid small block chevy mounts and the Carshop 1" setback plates.....as I said, perfect fit all around. Used Hooker 1st Gen Camaro headers....both can be installed from the top of the car...no issues at all.

used a template found in the FAQ sticky... i believe they're identical to the standard carshopinc mounts, and they put my engine into the heater core nipples @ the firewall. there's no way i could use 1" setback plates.

Im running a th350 with a stock crossmember.

I found out you can drill the frame and move the crossmember forward, but the driveshaft yoke will be exposed another .75" or so, so I would rather just use the 1" setback mounts

Im also using a stock 350 trans, crossmember and driveshaft in my Nova with the 1" setback mounts. The 1" setback mounts put my trans in its stock location.

how did you install the engne. with the non set back mounts, I had to use a prybar to get it to seat. I am afraid its gonna be difficult with the engine having to go back another inch.

any trans tunnel clearance problems?

Actually the install was easy. Motor and trans went in together. Dont get me wrong, its tight to the firewall with minimum clearance, but everything works. My car was a factory AC car and I wanted to keep my heat. I installed an AC Delete box. The pass side head is close to it,but not touching. As for the trans tunnel, no problems at all. Didnt have to modify anything.

ok, got the 1" setback mounts in and can verify that everything now lines up like it did with the old sbc and bbc.

it is close to the firewall, but not more so than when I had the bbc in there.

so, to recap , for novas, use the setback mounts

driver side has plenty of clearance. over an inch

passenger side has probably less than an inch. its close

and it created more room upfront. Im actually thinking about going with pusher fans and mounting the turbo upfront, right behind the radiator
