I'm running 16x8 with 5.5 bs on front tire is a 225/60/16 26.62 dia 8.64 section width. with 2 inch drop front. Steering arms are spaced inward to clear tie rod to rims (drop spindles). 8 inch 4.75 bs rubs hard on inner fenders. The chevy might have more room than the olds not sure.

I've got 17x7 with 4" bs on the front of mine with 215/50/17 and it rubs on hard corners or pulling into banked/steep parking lot while turning. Car is about 1" lowered

seems like it could go inboard a mile. Granted that tire size matters, but between rockytopper and I, it seems like they don't like more than 3" or rim going outboard. So with 8" rim, I'd aim for 5" backspacing at a minimum (if you have stock control arms and spindles).

I have got a 66 el camino with 17x7 in the front with 4 inch backspace and a 2454517 tire and it rubs the swaybar, but its not a big deal... I am happy with it.

original poster... I have a 255/55 on my 8" rears. Tire measures an honest 28.0" by 10.0". A 255/50 is just a skosh shorter, I don't know that that's a wise front tire choice. Just seems like a big tire to me.
