Default 88Lx mustang 5.3 swap

Just purchased a 5.3 with the computer and wiring harness for 500 bucks so i plan on swapping this into my 88 fox. The parts that i plan on buying are the aje k member and mounts, t56 trans depending on how hard they are to install, going to make a trans crossmember, and a set of dynatech headers. Hows my parts list looking? Am i missing anything? And i'm not sure of how to do the wiring. it sounds to easy to just plug it up and let it ride. any input is appreciated.

You have to wire up ign power and 12v all the time power.

It's really pretty simple, just pull out any wiring that you are not even going to use, such as: AC, EGR, AIR, and rear o2's.

Here is a site that will help you out on the wiring.

An automatic transmission is much simpler to install since there are no hassles with clutch pedals, linkage or hydraulic slave cylinders. The determination really comes down to what you want the car do do. Most drag racers I know want auto's however a few swear by manuals - and make them work very well. I don't know anyone who auto-crosses with an automatic and drifters always want to row their own. My Thunderbird uses a 4L60E because I literally tripped over one in working order for $100, the car is a quick budget built daily sleeper and the engine originally came with one. Since I already had the pedal setup for a manual but wasn't able to find a gearbox within the budget or time restraints I'll use it on another project. I'm holding out for a T-56 for my other car since I have time on my side, money is less of an object with that ride and it is a full custom hot rod anyway.

Hope this helps.

Not sure what you mean by the wiring question. I would just get a standalone wiring harness for the engine/trans and then use teh Mustang harness to run your lights/heat/ect. No need to try and integrate both harnesses together. If you have a specific concern let me know what it is.

...unless you are nuts like me and want everything inside and out to look stock you will need some adapters to run your gauges. My Thunderbird uses the factory ford diagnostic connector, shifter and gauge cluster so it is ultra sleeper. Those, along with the ignition and power for the fuel pump were the only places the factory harness and the GM harness mate. Otherwise the engine is stand alone.

pulled the old motor and trans and sold that for the price of the new motor. sandblasting the engine bay and spraying it with weld through primer and smoothing it next week. fabbing up motor mounts in the mean time.

Sounds like fun, I can't wait to get my fox build back on track. Did you pull out the dash harness and clean up those wires? If so which ones did you remove. I was thinking of pulling out all the ac stuff, and seat belt wires and all the other misc bs.

Haven't pulled the dash out yet. My plans for the wiring is to run the fuel system off the ls computer and everything else off the factory harness, and for spark it'll run off an MSD6010.
