Default short starter body

Has anyone measured the starter body length? I have an LS1 starter (reman) that has failed and it was a PITA to get out because the rear hits a runner on my shorty header. The body measures from the bellhousing to the back at 7 1/2 inches. I heard the truck starters are shorter but can't confirm.

Anyone have more info? I need to find one soon and don't particularly want to pay $200 for an autozone starter.

This is in a Miata and there isn't much room to maneuver around the headers so getting one that's 6 1/2 or maybe even 7 inches long would allow R&R without pulling the header.

Thanks,
Frank

Yeah, this is from an 08 truck. It's about 6.5" long from the back to the mounting face.

Not only shorter, but the diameter of the starter body is also smaller.

It gives a lot more room compared to a standard LS1 car starter:

thats interesting, i would think the truck would use a larger one for torq, not the other way around-i have a lose one, gonna measure it-maybe the truck has a gear reduction, i remember the one i got, i tore it apart to clean it up, it was pretty dry, so i greased it up, def makes them work better, less bind
i know the GM Hi Perf book listed several starters, some were only avail. rebuilt, not new-

Perfect, just what I needed. Were all the truck motors the same? The Delco part number at Rockauto cross references with pretty much all the trucks back to 2000. I don't want to hit a boneyard just to find that some had longer and some had shorter starters. Obviously I'll take a tape measure but would hate to take a 40 mile round trip to find a long one.

I've got an '07 Silverado and '06 Hummer starters locally at boneyards.

Just search some more part numbers. Looks like the Delco is 3361932 or 3361932A from the 6.0 liters. The 5.3s have a 3361929 and don't show compatibility though they will probably fit. FWIW when I was at Autozone yesterday getting my F-body starter tested, I had them pull a 5.3 truck starter and it was the same length as the F-body.

Thanks,
Frank

Did you look in any of Crazy Ray's yards? He's getting alot of C4C vehicles in and there a fair amount of those trucks turned in. There wasn't any in the yard by Glen Burnie last weekend, but you never know what turned up this week or whats at the other yards

Got one shipped from a guy here. Good price so hopefully I'll get this sorted out this weekend.

I'll still need one. Guy shipped me a friggin' starter that's over 7 inches, just like the one I have.

Hey Frank, did anything come of this? If you got a new starter, how'd it fit with the Sanderson's? I'm thinking about dropping the starter out for a shorter on now while I have the chance.

Its either the truck starter or the Summit starter. I can't seem to find much on the Summit starter though

I got one locally. I think it was from the '07 Silverado. Definitely shorter like Speartech showed and was much easier to go in with the header loose but not removed.

Bumping an old thread since the info in it helped me today as I was searching for shorter length starter to fix a header clearance problem.

Went to parts store and had them pull a starter for '01 Tahoe 5.3L LM7 (left), '07 suburban with 5.3L LC9 (middle), and '08 Silverado LY6 6.0L which is same part number for '08 Escalade L92 6.2L (right).

You can see the length differences, but also the starter motor girth differences. I haven't dug into what the starter performance differences are, but feel like the '08 starter for bigger displacement engines is best bet for me, while also solving the length issue.

The one on the left has 11 teeth, the middle 9 teeth, don't know about the newer 6.2 starter. the 05-07 5.3 starter will turn the engine over slight slower but will start just fine.

What starter did you guy use? I tried a 2005 Silverado 5.3 starter but it wont go flush. Guess I could dremmel the starter down but hate to do that to a 150 dollar starter and then it still jot work.
