Default Finally an Engine(LM4) What the hell is...

this thing sticking out of the crank case?

Thanks to those of you who pushed me not to buy one of those LM7s for $800. A highschool teacher responded to my ad and sold me a 06 LM4 out of a Buick Rainier with less than 12k on it for $350! The guy said the truck was in a front end collision and he's had the engine in his shop since 06. It didn't have an alternator and I found out afterwards that the starter is missing too. But he gave me the entire wiring harness for the car it seems like along with the PCM. Here are some pics.

Summary:

Got for $350 the following:
LH6* correction I thought it was an LM4, but its not.
A/C
Wiring Harness
PCM
Powersteering pump

Missing:
Intake
Throttlebody
Starter
Alternator

This is the thing I can't identify

I believe it is used in those too. But the guy had the transmission and rear end as well.

According to Wikipedia its an LH6.

2005-2007 Buick Rainier

LH6

The LH6 with Active Fuel Management replaced the LM4 for 2005, and was the first of the Generation IV small block V8 truck engines to go into production. It is the aluminum block counterpart to the LY5.

hmmmm

Nice find.

The piece coming out of the oilpan is for the front diff/cv axles.

LS4 is the one that came in the Monte Carlo SS IIRC...

Ok that's what I figured it was. I didn't realize I was buying a gen IV. I already bought a ls1 intake and corvette fuel rails. Will those still bolt up to this or am I going to have to buy LS2 stuff? I take it the holes in the oil pan are just to allow for oiling to the front diff and that replacing this with a regular oil pan will fix my problem?

Vancouver eh? I'm a Vancouverite as well... know of any other LSx'ers in our town? Marktainium is here too.

True about the find, that's really awesome. Up here an aluminum/iron/anything-Gen 3/4 usually costs an arm and a leg... and also a kidney.. it's annoying.

Ya man there is the one guy in langley selling 2 5.3l engines for $800, and now he upped the price to $900. When I called him originally he told me they were both alluminum. When I showed up they were both iron blocks. There's that guy selling one for $1500 and another guy selling a 6.0l but he won't name a price.

How are you hearing about these things? I check Craigslist pretty often for stuff just in case, but I never find anything LS-related...

You have to search 5.3l or 6.0l or vortec. I've been doing that for the last 3 months and these are the only 4 engines i've turned up. The one I just got was some1 responding to my wanted ad.

that looks like the front axle goes thru the oil pan?? Damn!

Get a Camaro oil pan, windage tray, and oil pickup tube.

Here are some pics of the wiring harness. I have another mystery part, i think I it's the ABS controller or something.

The thing on the passenger side of the engine is the front diff actuator and the thing on the other side is the front diff. You can just unbolt those from the oil pan and there is a hole right through the center of the pan. Gm did this to be able to set the engine lower in the vehicle on the trailblazers, envoys, and raniers.

ahhh, thanks for the explanation. Is there a way to cap off the holes or do I need a new oil pan?

The holes don't actually enter the oilpan, just go through it. Like a tunnel.
