GM A body t56 question
I have done a search but have not been able to find the information that im looking for. I’m looking into doing an LS1 t56 swap into my 1970 El Camino. currently I have a bench seat, but would eventually like to do a bucket seat and stock console swap.
So is it possible to do a t56 swap while retaining the stock shifter location?

You can come close, but I don't think that without relocating the shifter to a forward position that you can do it. You can make up some with a offset shifter. There is a kit made to move the shifter forward but it requires disassembly of the trans and you have to cut the shift rail. Here is my location in my CHevelle.

I tried to do the swap with my Chevelle and keeping the Bench seat.. but a F-Body T56 will come up under the front of the bench seat frame. you would need to move it forward about 4+ inches. Shifter relocation kit are out to use one of the forward inspection location, but they costly.
My solution was to use a Viper configure T56, it has a mmore forward shifter location and it was just right location, this is a picture before I got a Hurst Shifter and the Trans Tunnel re-fab'd.
