Default Alternator question

I plan on mounting the alternator in a non standard position. I was wondering if a 3 rib belt would have enough grip to power the alternator without slipping. I think the only reason for the 6 rib on the serpentine is for the power steering. Let me hear your thoughts

Why do you want to go to 3 rib? Why not stick with the 6?

I think the key to slipping is getting enough wrap on each pulley. I imagine the width is more for overall strength. But I'm guessing on that.

depending on what your putting the motor in i dont know why you couldnt place the alternator in the factory location....it sticks up kinda high but clears the factory hood on my 70 el camino......
