Converting...and mileage
Someone mentioned the other day that he did his 67-69 Camaro and was getting like 16mpgs and it made me think. Back in the TPI days, there were a few street rod guys talking about how they were getting 28 mpg with 331 and 308s with like a 25-27 inch tall tire in 37 Fords, 63 Nova wagons, etc.
Now if one was to do it with an LS1 setup...what would be your choices. 5.7, 5.3, 6 speed, auto?? What would you do for a tune? Cast manifolds or headers? But the main question is why??? How does one really geek out on this to make the most MPG?
Chad
p.s. I know little about doing a tune or flash on a LS1

If you wanted pure milage def. the 6 sp. I doubt there is ALOT of difference in fuel between the 5.3 vs. 5.7 given same driving.

Lower the car and reduce weight. Most savings will be by reducing weight and keeping your foot out of it.

Reason why I ask is that I hear few that actually get high MPG other than the 2000 Vette guys.
The other day coming home 2 hours from a customer in my work van with a dmax 480 combo I got 27MPG loaded down at 9700#. If I can get this with a fat van..what can I do on something 1/3 of its size.

I think most that swap LSx motors are looking for power and not really Max MPG and power. Plus its hard to keep your foot out of it. I couple of hard WOT pulls and you ruin your MPG on a given tank.

Bo185,
I would think the 6M would give better milage than the 6L80E. Yeah... it has the DEEEEEEEP 1st, but what is the 6th gear? Then you have to concider extra cost. paddle shift and custom mounting etc... I could of got a 6L90E w/30K for $800.00 I think it was. (I bought its LY6) so you can get the trans cheap, just more of a hassle.

The 6l80/90 sixth OD is .66 so better than the 4l60/65/70. And with the nice first gear you can use a taller 3.08 final drive which makes up for the better T56 6 gear.

That's why my DD is a TDI I keep my foot in it all day and still get 45mpg!
Even in a car I would think an LSx would knock down a decent 20mpg avg with numerous healthy runs at wot.
I say everyone post your swap and best MPG tank ever or even avg tank MPG with regular driving.
