Default LS2 in a 1970 Ford F100

Has anybody on here done this before? Know of anybody who has? Maybe something similar?

I picked up an LS2 from an '06 GTO with 28k miles on it. I'm going to be tossing that into my 1970 F100 with a TKO 600 tranny. I've got a few questions about the drive-by-wire setup. The motor came with the wiring harness and computer, I got the pedal assembly too, and the TAC module is on the way and should arrive shortly. I'm not familiar with the drive-by-wire setup so any advice/info would be greatly appreciated. I'd also appreciate any input anybody might have on what to look out for with the swap. It's got a 360 FE motor in it right now with what I believe is a NP435 transmission, but not sure yet until I pull it.

Here's a few pics. The first one is my truck, second the LS2, and third should be the donor GTO. Poor thing.

Never seen it done. Should be a sleeper when you get it done. Keep us updated with pictures. Would like to see how it turns out.

Yeah, it was a beautiful car. I took that picture and some others so I could look at them later while I was at home to see if there was anything else I wanted off the car. I've called the salvage yard a couple times already for things here and there I didn't get on my first trip (PIM, BCM, TAC Module). I keep going back to this pic of the guages. I would LOVE to try and put those gauges in my truck, but I've already spent lots of $$ on some aftermarket Autometer gauges. Still, I think I might get the gauges anyway...

Yeah, they have one of the nicest clusters from the factory IMO.

The 2003 and newer Crown Vic front crossmember with rack and pinion steering is said to be an easy bolt in to those trucks and give it a great ride. I'd hate to have an LS powered vehicle with the handling of twin I-beams!

Thanks for the suggestion Old Kid. I've seriously been losing a lot of sleep over what to do with the front end on this thing. The truck is a death trap. It's the original I-beam suspension, manual steering, manual 4-wheel drum brakes, and the gas tank is tucked up nice and neat right behind the bench seat in the cab. Unfortunately I'm now somewhere around $10.5k into this project that was originally budgeted at $5k (I was gonna do this with an LQ4). I've got a lot more good ideas than I've got money. I'm going to look into this with the Crown Vic front-end though, that might be the solution to a lot of my problems. Thanks again for the suggestion.

Ahh. The good old days when people didn't sweat the small stuff! Probably has an all steel dash and a one piece steering column aimed right at your chest.

Brings back memories of my first truck.

Hey Pop N Wood,
Didn't they refer to the Falcon/Mustang steering column as the "spear"!

Hadn't heard that one, but I think they were all built that way back then.

I'm putting a 5.3 into my dropped '69 f100 shortbed right now. Had to fab up custom motor and transmission mounts, but that's about it. I would suggest buying a universal tranny crossmember from CCP or someone. I ended up spending more making mine than a new one would have cost. You won't regret going with an LS. They are amazing. I can post some pics of my build if it will help. Your truck is going to be sick.

Wiot, I install a ford crown vic on my 76, and right now I'm looking into installing a 5.3 vortec in this truck. Here is a pic of the front suspension.

So wait, the CV front end bolts on? I have a friend with a very clean and complete '69 Ranger SWB truck that I can get CHEAP. I've been thinking about buying it and usinf it for a daily.

i was really close to doing an 86 F150 LQ9 swap, until i found a killer deal on a vette for the motor. Its not all that bad since the older trucks dont have many options and crap to keep working. I would rewire most everything. Go with a fuel cell under the bed or in the bed for the easiest solution to your fuel. Are you going carburated in this swap?

Mounts shouldn't be bad if you know anyone who can weld half way decent or if you can.

If you go with fuel injection.
Spend quality time on the harness, this is where i got most frustrated. You can save a good bit of cash making your own from the stock one, and make it just a stand alone harness with your own fuse box and such. This will let you put the PCM anywhere.

What rear end is in it? Find an old explorer with an 8.8 w/disks and an upgraded master cylinder.

jastay1, here is the truck with the 5.3 and the c/v installed. I had to buy some lift kits for the front suspension and bought a lower kit for the rear, it drop about 4" in the rear. For the gauges I bought the one from Dakota Digital
