Default '87 IROC What to put in?

Just bought an '87 IROC. Been sittin on a farm for 7 years. The wiring is all messed up on it, somebody got a little happy splicing (had to be an electrician cause they used wire nuts). It's 305 TPI but I don't want to even attempt to throw money into getting that motor running. Completely striping car down for paint and interior. Only problem is, I don't have a clue what motor to put in it. I've always wanted a LS1 in one but they are just too expensive, so i'm leaning towards a carbed 350. Also been lookin into 6.0 and even 5.3's. Throw me some ideas that can easily put me around 400hp with as little money as possible. Thanks guys

4.8/5.3 are gonna be the lowest price options for motors.

Stock 5.3s are dirt cheap... a stock 6.0 isn't much more. For my money, I'd go with a 6.0. You can get them in great shape for under a grand. 400 horse out of a 6.0 basically means a cam swap. 400 horse out of a 350... well, that's going to cost a lot more. I also wouldn't trust a high mile 350 without a rebuild, but a 100k mile LS motor is just getting broken in.

Jim85 hit the nail on the head. Also note that the bore on the 6.0s will accept high perf. heads, ie. L92. Cause we're all gonig to want to upgrade eventually. Lots of low milage cheap 6.0s. And you can buy 2 or 3 for the price of a low milage LS motor.
I went with an LQ9 in my 68 corvette. Love it!

Thanks for the replies guys. If I go with the LQ4 or 5.3 would it be best to completely strip every wire from the car and start from scratch?

I used a wiring harness and pcm from a f body. Of couse you will need to get the car intake manifold, fuel rail with injectors, and acces setup. that would be the best way to go. you can make a truck wiring harness work but you will have to change fuel injector connectors. i think thats the main diff.

Get the harness and computer, probably cost you an extra $50. Any harness can be modified, and computer reprogrammed.

if your staying N/A go for the LQ9, they go for a tad more then LQ4's but the compression is like 10.3 compaired to the 9.3ish on the LQ4.

I bought an LQ4 just bc it didnt matter to me, just needed the block and sensors lol.
