Default Serial Data Signal

Is there a way to check for the data signal to the gauges using basic equipment like a multimeter? All parts are from a 99 SS, voltmeter and oil pressure work so I have 12v and ground. Gauges signaled from the data line are not working. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Check the voltage on the serial data wire at the cluster with the key on. It toggles voltage between 0 and 7 volts very quickly so expect your meter to average it out to 3-4 volts. It doesn't really matter what the voltage is as long as it's not 0 or 12v.
