Default Used LS Motor. How many miles is too many?

I just checked the local bone yard and the lowest mileage LQ4 they have is 75,000 miles. What is the highest mile motor you would consider for a swap without a rebuild?

I have swapped them in with as high as 140k on turbo cars with no issues. Regularly they have between 60-110k at the time of swap. My daily driver truck has it's original 5.3 with 200k and it does NOTHING to indicate more than 50k miles. No leaks/ smoke/ oil usage. I wouldn't think twice about swapping it into a project for myself tomorrow....

I agree. My daily (the Thunderbird in my sig) was at 103K and doesn't leak or smoke and gets beaten on daily. I have 10K after the swap and it runs like new. My neighbor has a 1/2 ton Silverado with 227K he tows a flatbed trailer with cars on the back all the time and it doesn't leak, smoke, make noise or have any other problems. High miles on these engines is not 100K like it used to be, it's probably closer to 175 or maybe more. I still had a bit of cross hatch in the bores on my engine before the swap!

I guess what I am saying is I haven't seen a single parts failure on one of these engines that wasn't created by abuse or neglect. I'm not saying it can't happen but in stock and mildly modded form it is one of the - if not the most bulletproof platforms I've ever run.

I would feel totally comfortable swapping in a 150K or higher mile Gen III / IV engine if it looked good inside the valve covers and pan.

Well then, the next question is: Is this 2001 LQ4 as good as any year? What I have read so far, they are pretty much all the same until you get to the LQ9, right?

I have 153k on the engine I swapped into my Camaro. Running the cluster from the donor car as well to keep track of original mileage. Haven't had a single hiccup! Runs bottom 12's all day!

Pop a valve cover and see if the oil has ever been changed. Sludge = overhaul regardless of the mileage

If it looks clean, run it

Id suggest a new oil pump regardless of mileage and its easier to do it before its dropped in the car. While the pan's off flip it over and inspect the cyl walls. If those are still good and theres nothing obvious like a spun bearing then drop it in

I agree with these guys, one of the best judges of the engine's "character" is how it looks under the valve cover. I have had almost 100 of these engines and you can sure see a huge difference in how they were taken care of by what's under the valve cover. Some still look new and some are dark brown...all depends on how the maintenance was.

Is that complete all accessories, wiring and computer? I have been looking for a while and they seem to be around that, found many in the 1200-1600 range all mileage dependant, with 75k miles it may be a little high at least compaired to what they have been going for in my area.

Thats the same price I got for a LQ4 with appx 100k on it. No accessories, computer, or harness, so that seems to be the going rate.

Ive seem lsx motors with over 150k and stilll have good cross hatches in the cylinder walls, but it all depends on how well it was taken care of.

I agree 100% with the valve cover, especially the drivers side since that has the pcv system in it and typically gathers more sludge.

LOL. That is who quoted me that price.

As I look around more. I have found them from $850 to $2000. The one for $2000 has 55,000 miles and they are pretty proud of it.
