Default 1975 Olds Delta 88 Convertible E-Rod

My E-Rod engine finally arrived. Now I'm waiting for the 4l65e with controller, the FEAD, the AC relocation kit, the LS engine mount adapters, and the rear end to be done with 3:73 ring and pinion, posi, and rear disc brake conversion. She's just going to be a cruiser car. I have love for the B-Body convertibles. Will show progress pics when the project begins.

Question: Shouldn't the E-Rod PCM/ECM handle the Transmission contorls?.. if so, why would you need a controller for the 4L65E ?

Post some picture of your progress...

That's a good question. The E-Rod brochure recommends buying the 4l65E trans and controller. This is my first endeavor into engine swaps, so I let GM Performance parts do all the guess work.

"The E-ROD kit does not include a transmission. GMPP recommends the GM Hydra-Matic electronically controlled 4L65-E four-speed automatic, part number 19156260, and transmission controller, part number 12497316."

Here are some pics. It has an Olds Rocket 350 (worn out), 165000 miles, TH350 Trans, 2:73 rear end. It has a new top and new interior, and 20" wheels. When the project is complete, she'll get body work done and a new paint job. It won't be a show car or race car, just a weekend cruiser.

Default E-Rod unloaded from truck

Here it is being unloaded from the truck. Next week comes the transmission and controller. This Friday the new ring and pinion along with the posi gets installed. Once I have most of the important parts, out comes the Rocket and BOP trans.

I love those cars. My mother had an orange-red one when I was a kid... it was the first car I remember as a child. Because of the color, I thought it was the General Lee.

I'll be a lot of fun to watch this build thread.

The eaton posi and 3:73 ring and pinion just got installed and now she's in the shop getting the drums converted to discs. Once the 4l65E TRANS and controller comes in next week, the Rocket engine is coming out. I'll have more pics then. The shops won't let me in garage to take pics.

Leave your camera for them to take the pics. Hell you're dropping a decent coin to them for the installation, the least they can do is take a few pics of the components being installed.

Also, whats the part number for the e-rods ecm?

After questioning why the extra controller and not use the ECM for transmission managment, I read a few things about the controller.. it looks like GM designed the ECM to be a standalone for the engine management only.

Would work well with manual trans.. and didn't program or designed the ECM to handle any of the transmission managment.. that is why you need a extra controller when using a Electronic controlled Trans (4L60E, 4L65E, 4L80e... ect...)

This project had to be aborted in 2010 after the Delta burned down. Luckily I didn't have the LS3 installed in it. The engine and trans ended up going in my 70 Monte Carlo. It's now 2014 and I got side tracked with another project and a deployment. I ended up paying a shop to complete the job. It's almost done, it just needs the trans controller to be programmed and the ECU programmed by GM. The shop keeps pushing my completion date further back because it keeps getting bumped by a customer who has a problem with warranty issues.

I spent some big coin on this car. It has a LS3 E-Rod, 4l65E trans, Wilwood Brakes, MC and Proportioning valve, Holley Oil Pan, Griffin Radiator LS Swap, Vintage Air, Currie Ford 9", Ricks Tank, AutoMeter Gauges with a Black powder coated aluminum gauge cluster, Edelbrock cat back exhaust, 4 speed floor shifter conversion. Interior redone with new front seats reupholster, new cut pile carpet, and a leather wrapped Grant Steering wheel. I will post pics and videos once it's finally out of the shop.

I never got that far into the project before the car went up in smoke. The K-member has multiple holes for different engine mounts. I would try using 75 Chevy Caprice small block engine mounts to use for the LS swap.

Default Question?

Why are you going with an E-Rod setup ? Are you required to pass a Smog test for a 1975 car where you live ?

if not, you could have save some cash my going with a LS3 create and just the wiring harness and a ECM ? The E-Rod kit is for pre-97 cars that are required to pass a smog test/cert.

For Calif.. a 1975 car wouldn't even be required to get re-cert'd...so where ddo you live and what is the state laws on swaps ?

just asking

The E-rod comes with an ECM where as the ls3 crate doesn't. If you factor in the costs separately it comes out to be the same.

If you got a Caprice plastic tank, the pump and sending unit are integrated. All you would need is a quick disconnect fitting if you are using an OEM for the Caprice style sending unit. If you are going return less, then use a corvette fuel filter/fpr.
