Default Chevelle temp gauge help

Got the lathed temp sensor back from LS1MCSS (awesome work and thanks again!) and installed but the gauge reads low (1 tic above 100* when the engine is as 195*.

Does anyone know where to get the ceramic resistor blocks that go on the back of the gauge? Mine is blue and ohms out to .086 and the only extras I have are yellow and ohm to .091

Also does anyone know how much I would need to change to get the gauge close to 195*? The gauge works by grounding the top post through the bottom with a resistor in between...with no resistor the gauge pegs.

maybe a .050-.060 ohm resistor? Would a regular wire resistor from radioshack work?

What kind of sensor, what kind of gauge?

the stock 71 SS chevelle gauge, the sensor is from a 87 Monte Carlo SS

the stock gauge uses a square ceramic resistor to determine the readings, I now know I need a higher ohm resistor to make my readings go up

I'm aproximating 100-110ohms should be close

Is there any way to get your hands on a gauge from a Monte and measure the resistor on it's gauge, or would that not work? Sorry, I'm no help on this one.

I could only guess you can just get a few resistors in the range you're thinking it may be and hit and miss until you get something close.

I have one thats 91, I guess if nothing else I can use that one and just watch for the temp to start rising if there are problems

seems no one sells these

ricks first gens sells used ones but doesn't specify ohms just what gauge they are supposed to fit in a first gen camaro

not sure if a regular circuit board type wire resistor would work or if it might burn up or anything or I could just pick some of those up at radioshack...i think you get 5 for $1

As long as everything's 12v they (radio shack resistors) should work.

noticed the gauge will jump up one tick at a time until it pegs if I turn the key to acc with the stereo on very loud (each time the bass hits it runs up a notch)

only did that in ACC though, but then yesterday noticed the guage is now pegged with the key on, every so often it falls to the bottom then jumps up again...thought the wire might be grounding but it's not

any ideas?

this is all with the stock guage and resistor btw...I never modified the resistor

Sounds like you're loosing continuity between the sender and the guage. If you unhook the sender it should peg the gauge "hot", and if you groung the wire that goes to the sender it should peg the gauge "cold". (or vice-versa, but I think that's right) So try grounding the wire and then turning up the stereo, if the gauge moves, start checking the wires between the gauge and sender. Also check the bulkhead connector, they can become corroded over time, and the wire from it to the sender can get hard and crack from the heat of the engine over the years.

its the other way, unhooked the gauge drops, grounded on the header it pegs...its staying pegged all the time now

try using a potentiometer to tune in your value. that will save you tons of farting around.

that could work, but I need to figure out why its pegging first...

ground might have come loose from the gauge but I didn't have time to pull the dash pad off to look

If the gauge is staying pegged, then it's either grounding out somewhere in the wire between the gauge and the sender. If you unhook it from the sender , it's sitll pegged? Does it move at all when you turn the key on and off? Maybe it's not getting power, might have to pull the cluster and check the printed circut that goes to the gauges, sometimes the will burn up or get little breaks in them.

when plugged in key off it bottoms like normal, key on it pegs

unplugged it stays bottomed...so this leads me to think when the key on and power goes to the cluster circuit to power the gauge either the temp sending unit is grounding instantly or the resistor between the 2 gauge posts is dead so it is jumping full power to peg the gauge

I guess I am going to take the dash pad off and make sure the ground is still hooked to the gauge and check the resistor and printed circuit...might not be able to do that until next weekend though...so keep the ideas coming
