Default 67 camaro LS1/4l60 GTO IRS

67 camaro LS1/4l60 GTO IRS. figured i'd start a build thread, although my finish date is slated for HRPT 2011.

car has been in the family for 25 years. All body work is done, new everything but the roof N doors!

have a parts car w. a 88kmi ls1 and 4l60e, and a whole complete IRS out of an 04 GTO.

the motor will be easy...the IRS is going to take some ouch cutting to fit. Too my knowledge no one has done this irs swap, if someone has, please link me to info!

I'll try to update as much as I can, I need to yank the still fresh, 15 year old 327 and th400 out of it and start on the rearend first

There is a dude downunder that has done this IRS swap in a Gen 1. I reached out to a buddy to see if he knows whether there are shots on a site. Considered doing a G8 IRS into a Gen 1. Had it under the rear but did not want to cut that much out of the existing body.

There is a car on pro-touring.com or lateral-g.net doing this swap.... I'd have to do some research to find it.

I am very interrested to see this swap, I would think the VE/G8 style IRS would be a better option, but I've never gotten a good look at one out of the car. Both types are on a sub-frame though IIRC.

Yes the VE/G8 design is much more up to date/more advanced. The GTO design is over 20 years old but still very good and takes less space than the VE/G8.

Almost identical to the Camaro as well. Though Camaro is manufactured by American Axle in the US and VE/G8 by ZF in Australia.

VE/G8 IRS:

It is a complete modular style. 4 bolts. Similar to BMW. The GTO IRS still requires seperate spring pockets.

The only reason i'm using the GTO IRS is we took it out of a gto thats now a tube chassis outlaw 10.5 car, so we already had it. I'm not worried about wheelhop or anything, this is for my father and he will just cruise the car, maybe do some autox at events like ls fest. I don't even think we will put a cam in it.

I'm just excited to ditch the factory mono-leaf rear susp the car still has from the factory!

Great project, I love it.
I looked at doing something similar for my current project (72 olds cutlass). Although the corvette C4 rear suspension looked easier since it didn't have the whole subframe to adapt.

I am looking to do the same swap into a 72 Nova, so any headway you make on the project please share. I have an 05 GTO and there are several things you can do to avoid wheel hop but like you said, if your just going to curise, it shouldn't be a problem. I have been comparing pictures of the undercarriages of the 05 GTO and a 72 Nova and it looks doable but there will be a little fabrication involved.

I saw this in your signature... I'm in the middle of a 6.0 turbo swap in my '69 Nova, but sorry, it isn't for sale. If you do get started on a Nova build maybe we can compare notes. I'm just down the road in Huntsville, AL.

Good luck with the IRS swap. How is the width compared to the 1st Gen axle? Are you going to minitub it while it's under the knife?

still slowly messing with it. Picked up some sweet *** 19s for the car. Other than that nothing worth writing about. Been working on other peoples cars and my 66 chevy II 4 door I picked up a few weeks ago. The camaro seems to be one of those long term projects, It hasnt been in "finished" condition in 25 years haha

heres the nova, granny fresh with 66,000 miles. Still has 283/glide in it. hunting a good front clip right now and 04ls1/t56 waiting to slide in
