Default Stans 1968 camaro LS swap and other upgrades!

Hi guys, wana say thanks too all the great post on this forum and all that i have learned here from reading all of the camaro swap post.i bought my 1968 camaro this past summer.the car was re done three years ago, everything is pretty much new on the car.it had 1600 miles since the rebuild!when i bought the car i had the vision of putting in a ls1 or ls6!.it currently has a 383 with edelbrock performer heads and a t10 4 speed. it has around 500hp.the guy i bought the car from did an awsome job on the car!!its like a new car, pretty much replaced everything!over the christmas holiday i started to pull the engine and get ready for the swap.

i bought a 1997 ls1 from a corvette, the motor is suppose to have low to no miles on it!since the motor was the older ls1 i wanted to upgrade some stuff on the motor, called up texas speed and decided on there 243 stage 2 ported heads and a 228r cam!im also going with a ported oil pump,ls2 timing chain and a stock ls6 intake.my goal was to to get more power, but dont want to kill gas mileage, want to drive and enjoy the car!

Good start on your project.

You should be able to use the radiator. just need to need down the upper inlet to the LS1 size. Also.. since it is a early LS1.. put some ARP rod bolts in it.

And that BBC heater will come in handle. I need to swap my Nova one out for a BBC Setup.

Keep it going !

I wonder if you could have a new end tig welded on the existing radiator. Shouldn't be too costly to have that done. Probably alot cheaper than a new radiator. Just a thought.

I was just going to suggest the you have someone weld an new inlet on to it.. but TSNOW678 beat me too it.. LOL

Someone should be able to cut off the existing one and weld the correct size tube on it.

Many are using junk yard Ford Taurus fans.. great out put and about the right size for 1st gen F-Body radiators. They do draw a good 30+ almost 40amps.. just keep that in mine when wiring up a relay and source. There are many aftermarket one for the high price, shouldn't be hard to come up with something...

Stan,

Very nice Camaro you have. I like the black accents on the hood & spoiler.
What size rear tires are they & back space on rims?
Keep the BeCool if you can...I have a 67 Camaro and after buying the 'exact fit' BeCool, I realized that the top & bottom ports on the radiator were a different size than the stock LS1 rad. After seeing your rad, I went out to the garage & tried to verify the inlet/outlet sizes of the BeCool. It's a little difficult to do this now bec the hoses are covering the tubes.
Anyhow, I believe that the upper tube(metal) is 1 1/2 & the lower tube is 1 3/4. If you decide to use your BeCool, verify the tube sizes.
Also, the hoses which I found also accommodate a CAI tube which exits toward the driver's side and ends in the front fender well.
Here's a post from my build explaining what I did to locate the hoses.....

Quote: gMAG For application "1998-00" (LS1), Classic Industries listed these..Goodyear MH585/upper (cut to fit) & MH1235/lower (cut to fit). When the hoses arrived, I then realized that the ports on the BeCool "exact fit" radiator were larger than the stock LS1 rad, which made these hoses unusable. They would have fit perfectly on the stock rad though!
For the BeCool, a 2 hour foray @ PepBoys led me to these...upper (E)71911 & lower (D)71426CS.
No matter which of the two upper hoses were used (stock rad or BeCool), there was a little bending involved to make them fit, and I thought that the hose might suck closed at the bends. Another trip to Advance Auto for a hose containing a long spring. You can buy the cheapest one...the idea being that the spring is removed from THAT hose, then cut in two sections, then each section of spring worked into each bend in your new upper hose. This worked well.

Hope this is helpful, Stan.

Just wanted to add...as you can see, the stock fans were reused from the 98LS1 (same as tours, I think), and no welding/changing ports required on the rad.
A bit of trimming on the left and right black plastic of the rad support is required. Some aluminum 'L' channel from Lowe's and a rivet gun will attach those fans on top of the rad, and three or four screws and couple of bolts and nuts on the bottom.
The 'L' channel on top will be 1/2" (into rad panel) X 3/4" (into upper fan panel) & riveted. You'll see how this fits.
I used 1" x 1" on the bottom with screws into upper side of alumin 'L' & lower rad shroud. Then, 1 bolt/nut apiece on either side of lower alum 'L' & car frame.
Notice that alum 'L' is two pieces on top!
Here's one pic of upper...thought I took many but can't seem to find more. Let me know if you'd like addtl pics.
