Default Porsche 944 LS1 conversion temp gauge not working

Hi all. I recently became the owner of a Porsche 944 LS1 conversion. Engine is from a 2002 Camaro SS.

It has a couple little things I'm trying to sort out, one of them being that the temp gauge doesn't work, it doesn't budge from the bottom of the scale.

The PO had put headers on the car shortly before I bought it and he says the temp gauge hasn't worked since.

The temp sender/sensor is on the driver's side of the head, inches from the headers, so something might have happened to the sender during installation of the headers.

However, the wires look completely fine and when I unplug the temp sender wires from the sender while the car is running the engine almost stalls out and then comes back up to idle, so I figure the temp sender must be working and sending some kind of signal to the engine. (Which is kind of weird because I thought I read somewhere here that that temp sender only sends output to the temp gauge and not the PCM?)

Anyway, any ideas?

Hi guys, I think I figured it out, it looks like the actual sender to the gauge is on the passenger side by the firewall, and the plug to it seems to be missing/broken.

Yeah, the Coolant temp sensor on the DS is for the computer. Typically you tap the same port on the opposite head for the 944 sensor. It sounds like you have already figured it out! Your going to have alot of fun with that car!!!

And it turns out the connector is not missing after all, the little spade-type terminal on the end of the wire slides on to the brass nub of the temp sensor. Temp gauge works now!

Nice car. Are you running the stock rear transaxle? I've been seriously thinking that a 944 would be an awesome swap, but the transaxle worries me. Even the turbo rears.

There are some well over 400RWHP running the factory trans without issue. The CV's breaking seem to be more of a common problem. That is usually due to a worn trans mount.

Thanks guys, as Anthro points out the factory trans has been proven to be plenty stout enough, especially the Turbo trans.

Regarding build pictures, they guy who built this car has a website with some info about the build and other conversions: http://www.hybrid9s.com/

Thanks to all for your compliments, the car is a total blast to drive!

I know this is wayyy of topic, but what does this thing weigh? I want to build a light road race swap, but I don't know what I want to build.

Typically around 3000 for a full interior car, with A/C and P/S... keeping the 50/50 weight balance almost perfectly... Now remove a few of those items, relocate the battery, it drops quick... Im thinking mine may end up slightly REAR biased.... Very quick on the track, will give MANY other production Porsche's a run for there money! Google Tony Garcia and watch his video's.
