Found the difference. The 280Z looks more like the 240Z, has a bit of a grille.
and the fender to cowl and door lines are different. The 280ZX has no grille, different body lines, and I suspect the width of the boxrails are different. The strut towers look bigger in the ZX, and the Z are more under the fenders. They look the same at a distance.

The ZX does have a grille, but it is under the bumper as opposed to over it as with the Z.

240Z: 1970-73
260Z: 1974-74.5
280Z: 1975-1978
280ZX: 1979-1983

ZX could be had with power amenities such as windows, locks, mirrors and antenna. The Z wasn't available with any of them. They weigh within 50lbs of each other with the Z being the heavier. They are also the same length and wheelbase to within one inch. The body structures are fairly similar.

The 240 260 280z body style was the same until 1978. 1979 the body style changed to the 280 zx that was available with the t-tops. I personally like the first body style, especially if you remove the bumpers. IF you decide to go v8 you will need to reinforce the frame. I have been concidering doing this as well, do a search and you can find the info you need. I had some sites saved in my parents computer at their house, but their computer crashed. If i can find any info that i printed out I will let you know.

Dragnzx, if you're interested in doing a LS1 or LT1 datsun Z hybrid, then to the following link: www.hybridz.org
It is the best place for information on this type of swap.

No, the body styles are not the same. They are all pretty similar and the 240, 260 and 280 all share more similiarity than the ZX. However, the body styles were not the same with the 260 departing the most noticably with an altered roof line. Also, a Z car can handle a V8 without frame bracing. The power output will determine whether or not bracing is necessary. A general rule of thumb is 450 to the ground. Check out www.zcar.com, www.hybridz.org and www.zhome.com for more info.

BigE, I was referring to the major body change in 79, not the smaller changes. Thanks for the links though, I had considered doing a v8 Z a few years ago until my daughter came along. I decided to put it off for a few years. It's about time for a new project and the 02 still has 80,000 on the warranty. THanks again for the links.
