Default 5.3 swap or stick with lt1?

i have a friend that has a complete 5.3 that he said i can have if i want and another friend that has a k member i can get and just really wanted to know if good power can be made from a 5.3? and would it be worth the trouble to swap from the lt1 to it? if so will i need the f-body brackets and accessories? does all the other ls1 aftermarket parts(cams, heads, intakes) work on the 5.3's?

A stock 5.3 makes more power than a stock LT1. Go LS for sure.

Ok thanks for the input. Is the cooling like on the lt1 where I can run decent compression on a street motor? Also are the 5.3 heads ideal to send off to AI or Lloyd or should I get something bigger?

I don't know. You've already got a running fuel injected engine that can easily make 400 hp. The 5.3 can make that number pretty easily too but it isn't currently in your car. I would spend the money you are going to put into the swap on a centrifugal blower and call it a day if the lt1 is still in decent shape. Just my .02.

[QUOTE=ishmael;14910448]I don't know. You've already got a running fuel injected engine that can easily make 400 hp.

What part of free 5.3 arent you understanding? And no an LT1 cant "Easily" make 400 hp, but the 5.3 is much more capable of making 400 more easier than the lt1. The cost of a centrifugal sc would be better spent on a h/c package for the 5.3 that would end up making more power than the sc and you'll have saved money. The opticrap alone was enough to make me swap my lt1, and the LS hp was like the icing on the cake. Hurry up and do it without giving it a 2nd thought.

Even with a free 5.3 you are still gonna spend more than it will be worth. You will have to source acc, intake, wiring, etc. You only be usin the long block so prolly only savings $150-$200 there. Better off selling your current car and buying a f-body with a LS1 already in it.

Being I've built a lot of lt1 and ls setups if you are going boost go 5.3, otherwise stick with the lt1. Also remember you will need fbody accessories, oil pan setup, intake, fuel rails, tb, etc etc if you do a 5.3...that all adds up to a lot more than people realize.

four years ago this was my first project... was exactly that swap. from the day the turbo lt1 irritated me enough to just pull it and go home and find a engine... it took two months later of ordering and constant work on it to finish.

I built the motor mounts... modded stock tranny k member for the th350.... built harness from the truck one (came with the 5.3)... COS tune before even starting it up. Build own hot parts... ect ect i think you catch my drift. Looked ****. Spent a bunch of money tho

It was literely 2 months from the day i decided to do it (the night i yanked the lt1). I hadn't ordered parts yet or done research on doing the swap. I mean. At that time most are more worried bout what CAI to get lol!

You will have to tap some holes in a iron block for the fbody accessories. The iron blocks and aluminum blocks aren't exactly the same.
