Question(s) on F-body fuel bucket....

Question(s) on F-body fuel bucket....
I am installing a f-body fuel bucket into a stock Chevy 2 tank, the tank is 8-3/4" deep. The f-body bucket can compress comfortably to 9". It will go to 8.75 if I use a little more force, and it does not crimp the lines or bind anything. I am using the vette works adapter plate and gasket.....
Questions -
Will it be able to run okay in this compressed condition?
What is the purpose of the springs and assembly that allow it to compress?
Does Walbro make a replacement pump for this, and can it be changed without damaging the components or the bucket.
How do you get the bucket apart, has anyone done this?
Thanks in advance for any help with this.

Hard to say, you can clearance some of the components and cut the springs shorter to get a lower profile pump.
The springs allow for the same design pump to be used in several different depth tanks.
Walbro makes 3 styles of the 255 intank pump. They vary based on the size and location of the pickup sock. Easy to change it.
There are 2 or 3 clips that hold the pump bucket to the upper section. Just depress them and pull apart.

Walbro makes a direct-fit replacement pump that requires no modifications to the bucket. It includes a foam ring that surrounds the pump.
Racetronix offers what I believe to be the same pump, but it comes with an aluminum sleeve for the pump to fit in (rather than the foam thing).
I just got the racetronix one to go in my 01 F-body tank, looks like everything was included to make a nice installation.
Whatever you do, make sure it's a direct-fit Walbro pump, or the stock bucket system will be left non-functioning after you do the mods required to make it work.

Compress the bucket out of the tank and verify it hits the depth you need. If so put it in. I believe the springs are to keep the bucket at the bottom of the tank. I used a Racetronix pump in my bucket and it fits like stock. Never had a problem and I drive the heck out of my car. Commute, roadtrips, track rentals, etc. Still going strong.

while I do like the fact that the bucket lets you run a low tank with little chance of fuel starvation, theres no reason you cant run a conventional intank pump setup either. plenty of LS1 guys are doing that when they cut the bucket, or on other conversions..
so if you do have to ditch the bucket, dont worry about it.
that said, going off the last time i messed with a bucket (5+ years ago) im pretty sure you can make it work by cutting the spring a little shorter.. if i recall correctly, it was the springs coil-bind that stopped the assembly from compressing further.

Walbro does not make any direct-fit pumps which are directly compatible with the 99-02 modules.

Ok, well maybe someone else is putting it out there and just using the walbro pump. This is the "other" one I was referring to that is a direct-fit for the stock bucket:
