Default Gap in passenger side

A lot of pictures of LS motors show about a 1inch or so gap between passenger valve cover and firewall on 1st gen Camaro's. Is there a reason for this? I am getting ready to fab my engine mounts. I wanted to understand this before making the mounts. I know it isn't much but I would like to eliminate that if there are. No reason for it. It would look nicer in my mind to set the motor back just a bit.
