Default 2007 5.3/4L60E into 1948 Chevy pickup

I have installed a 2007 L59 5.3 and 4L60E transmission in my 1948 Chevy pickup. I used 2001 Camaro cast iron center dump exhaust manifolds to clear the frame rails. The Camaro exhaust manifolds has the O2 sensor in the manifolds above the outlet for the exhaust dump.

Would this be a better location for the O2 sensors or should I weld in a bung and place the O2 sensors in the exhaust pipe about 12 to 15 inches from the manifold?

The O2 sensor will work best if kept in it OEM location and close to the Exhaust port. But you can move them if you have to.

Agree with BCZEE, the closer the O2s are to the engine the better the readings will be.

I am using a 2007 5.3/4L60E in my 1948 Chevy pickup. I replaced the portion of the firewall that had the recessed area for the original 6 cylinder engine. I also removed the factory cross member that supported the original 6 cyl. at the bell housing. I positioned the 5.3 as far reward as possible. The truck intake manifold was my positioning factor, which clear the new firewall by one half inch. In this position I am running my new Brass Works radiator in the stock position. I did not want to move the radiator. The front hub of the water pump pulley is 1 3/4 inches from the radiator. This engine had electric fans, so I am running an 18 inch Spal fan in front of the radiator pushing air thru.

I do not like headers and wanted to use cast iron exhaust manifolds, the truck exhaust manifolds could be made to work but would require trimming of the frame rails....So I used 2001 Camaro cast iron center dump exhaust manifolds. They are close but no trimming needed.

I have a TCI Super Ride front suspension, so I positioned the engine oil pan one half inch above the cross member. The pan extends about an inch below the cross member. I think the pan will be OK, but I do not have the wheels and tires I plan on using. I am hoping I do not have to remove about an inch from the oil pan...wait and see.
