LS1 Motors - how do you buy a "Good" used one? I've been wondering about this:
If you were buying a used LS1 Motor/trans that is no longer in the car,
what are some things to look for to make sure it is good?
What items do you want to make sure come with the motor?
What years are the most desireable?
Anything to avoid?

I gotta hear them run. If I can't hear a motor run I won't buy it. Sitting in a totalled out car in a junkyard is a good sign that it probably ran. Ad on craigslist, motor out of the car is a good sign theres something wrong with it.
I'd get the whole motor, intake to pan, flexplate to fan, wiring harness, pcm, mass air meter, gas pedal if dbw, If you can get the trans you want with it out of the same car, do it. The more parts the better, saves money later.

ask alot of questions,hell have a buddy go and see the seller and ask similar questions. see if the answers are consistent. Why did u pull it,mileage, pull the oil pan,valve covers.and avoid 98 yr model.look for 01-02 if its a camaro,trans am

maybe he means the piston slap, but i couldve sworn 98s were the ones who least suffered from this. Could be wrong though.
I know 98 fbodies didnt have a dummy temp. gauge and all kinds of other small things like that, but i doubt that has anyhting to do with the engine.

The big differences are that 98's run a different PCM operating system(?) that's supposedly harder to tune and they have weaker rod bolts. 01-02's have LS6 intake and no EGR.

Look for the complete set up out of a wrecked car. Then, if you haven't heard it run or have no confirmation that it's in good running condition(leak down, compression check), use it as a bargaining tool. You might just have to rebuild it. If the story doesn't add up, walk.

The 98 also had the small oil galley, under the rear cover. was enlarged for 99-up. the 98 rear cover is not interchangable with other years.

Word of mouth for a good seller if you're unable to hear it run yourself. I got my pullout off of ebay and researched the seller (can't recall who it was now) and it all checked out and pulled the trigger. So far, so happy.
