Default How about a 73'

95 LT1, I am with you! I have been looking into this option as well. I can not picture spending $500 to $1200 for headers! especially when Gen I headers can be had for $150!

I have been all over LS1Tech and SNS and a lot of the internet looking for a solid answer to this question and I have not found a confirmed yes or no. I have seen people use these headers on Chevelles from that period, but that is a whole different chassis. Strangly, I can not find a confirmation that these headers would work on a 1st gen Camaro, which is very close to a 3rd gen Nova.

Are you thinking about the $190 SS F-body headers on Ebay? Plese let me know what you find or if you are going to try a test fit into your Nova! Good luck!

My Mid lenght tubes from my 01 Formula didnt fit on my 72 Nova.. Along with a set of c5 Z06 stock manifolds, 04 6.0 truck manifolds, 04 gto manifolds... so I am lost as well.. that stock steering box is really making this a pain.. I might just get rid of that, and I am pretty sure anything will fit after that!!!

Let me know if you run into any luck with this.. I was about to post a VERY similar thread!!!

Default Manual Steering Box?

02 Ramair, sorry to hear you are having such a hard time finding an exhaust for your 72'! After several hours of searching yesterday I found several single posts that allude that full length F-body headers will fit the X-bodies with some massaging and bending. Check out Marktanuim's build thread for a little 101 on f-body collector re-positioning.

https://ls1tech.com/forums/conversio...o-build-7.html

P.S.This guy does some nice work for working out of a GARDENING SHED!

Is your Nova power steering or manual? I have been considering swapping my power steering out for a quick ratio manual box for the weight savings, simplicity and addition (and probably required) clearance.

Your motor mounts may not be helping your case. It sounds like different companies are pretty liberal with the placement of the engine in the both the vertical and fore-aft axes. What mounts are you using?

In General.. they well fit and work. Some have installed and used without any modification other have done minor tweeks to get them to work. the Collector angle is one of the area to mod.. it is not straight back but come out at a angle for a Y-Pipe.

Other have did some minor tweeking of the tubes due to the steering and crossmem ber, this is due to the way they have mounted the engine (setback, forward, higher or lower).

Default Good News

Bczee, thanks for the feedback. I think this is the route I will try. Those Edelbrock headers you used for your 71' sure look sweet, and the price doesn't seem that bad either, but I am doing this build on little more then a shoe string. Plus, all these folks with awesome 5.3 and 6.0 turbo builds, its enough to get a guy thinking....

Thanks again Bczee!

Default Manual Steering on Nova

LT1. It sounds like the manual steering box to use on 3rd gen Novas is a saginaw 525. This box was used on GM vehicles from the 50's up to the 90's and maybe later. Common ratios I have found are 24:1, 20:1, 16:1 and I think 12:1. Most common are the 24 and 20. It sounds like the best donors are 70's and 80's mid size cars, and 80's S-10s. But I have to warn, this is what I have found in my research! Search for Saginaw 525 and see what you find.

On Steve's Nova Site I see many guys looking to convert to power steering, I bet one of them would trade ya straight up. Whatever the source, be sure to get the manual pitman arm and rag joint from the donor!

PLEASE post back up here and let everyone know the results of the Ebay header install, I bet a lot of guys are waiting to see how it goes. Pictures are worth 1000 words! Good luck!

I have a manual box and the mid lenths were all over it.. so no luck.. I will take pics when I install the motor again..

Also I am using the Trans Dapt mounts, and with the swap pan, it makes good clearance for everything else..

Hi Rail, Here is phototbucket link to some pics on our headers...

We have long tubes and shorts, coated and not coated.

I recommend out 1inch setbacks helps on pan clearance

Give me a call if you wan to talk.
