Default LM7 vs LQ4 in C3 Vette

Having difficulty deciding which route to go...I love the 70-73 'vettes and I want modern muscle in a "sleeper". I want to to the Hot Rod Drag Week so I want it to be reliable and drivable and cheap. Looking for mid 11s. Thoughts?

Look up my 6.0 LQ9/Richmond 6 speed 68 corvette build. Minor mods and tune put it at 400hp and will overdrive the stock rear tires.
I've also got a 5.3 LM7 build with a Muncie in a 72 442. I was surprised at the torque of the 5.3 even in a heavy car with hiway gears.
If you want a "sleeper", go with the 6.0.
BTW, what trans and rear are you planning to use to get in the 11s. Vettes rear suspension is not the greatest for drag racing.

Gary--I'm going to be using S60 complete rear with a beefed 4L60E.

There are a couple carbed LS motors over at C3 corvetteforum turning some great 1/4 mile numbers. A good resource for your rear end setup with carb or efi.
The 4L60e and drivability aspect pretty much dictates you'll be going efi. Take advantage of LS2/3/6 intakes, heads, cams, exhaust, etc. You'll be at 500 very streetable hp and that should get you close to your goals with a streetable rear end ratio.

I'm getting ready to do this as well. Will be pulling the 406/th400 starting this weekend, putting it up for sale, and shopping for an LS motor. I'd like to do a T56, but cost may dictact a 4l60e or 4l80e.

Good luck with your build.

I don't know how much you have to spend on this project, but I am about to pick up my T56 from Texas Motorsports (210-887-7615) where the only downside is that they don't take autos for a core. They are however less expensive than anything I've found rebuilt at any shop and even summit, and they are rated at higher numbers. It's worth a peek. I'm using mine behind an LM7 in a Monte Carlo

I am installing a LS3 in my 72 Vette with a T56. It should produce around 520 flywheel HP. I do have a 12 bolt rear stuffed inside the stock carrier. You can check out my build over on the Corvette forum in the C3 Tech section. Still in the middle of it so sorting some things out still.

+1 on bigger. LQ9 would be better than the LQ4.. more compression.

But if your good with a 5.3L. try finding a L33, it has an alum block.. unless your boosting it, then stick with the iron blocks.
