Smoke upon start up only?
Im currently trying to track down a gremlin in my 1964 Chevelle SS LS6 swap. The car has an ls6, with a torquer 2 cam, ETP heads, and the works. The car is already tuned. Upon start up, it will blow stinky smelly burnt oil smell, smoke for about 5 seconds, and then it disappears. It does smoke at WOT, idling, nothing. Only after it sits for a bit, and as soon as I start it. I checked valve seals (no issues), compression (results 220-240). The only thing I noticed was the catch can was about half full of oil. I drained the oil in the catch can. Any other suggestions on what to look at? Thanks guys!

if the heads are ported most likely there will be a hole in the intake port right under the intake rocker arm mounting bolts...I always make sure to use sealer or oil may seep past the rocker bolt threads and drip slightly.
What does the rest of your pcv setup consist of?
I mount a small filter on the drivers valve cover/head, another small filter on the rear passesnger valve cover, and I will run the front pass. vent tube to the catch can, then the catch can to the vacuum port on the intake manifold. Or if you have the LS6 style vally vent deal, then put another filter on the front passenger valvecover and just use the vaslley vent tube for your catch can setup.
How many miles are on the LS6? were you able to loost at the cylinder walls, any wear?

We put sealer on the rocker arm bolts today.
Right now, pcv is setup like this: Passenger side rear has small breather. Passenger side front is capped shut. Driver side rear runs to catch can. Intake manifold to catch can.
We are thinking of capping the entire manifold shut, and deleting catch can, and adding a Metco Oil Filler Breather

Think maybe its normal then..the majority can chime in and back this up, but if (oil consumption) is barely noticeable, then no worries, these LS motors will eat/burn a lil due to a poor PVC system and when u run catch cans its not just OIL in there, but also expended gasses from the combustion chamber that dont evaporate. some have a fuel smell almost to it when u dump it out, FWIW i myself go thru about a 1 quart of oil between OIL changes, mostly from high RPM's at the track causing said high amount of combustion and also running a decent cam like yours u will have that , loading up kinda stuff here and there just tooling around..hope this helped

I appreciate your time and info, but it didn't do this before. The smoke is very noticeable, and smells horrendously like burnt oil. Yeah it only lasts about 5 seconds, but its not normal, and quite embarrassing. The hunt continues!

[QUOTE=wicked383bird;16015330]It isn't consuming any oil. At least not enough to be noticed and having to add. The LS6 was a crate motor. Im running Valvoline VR1.[/QUO
if its not consuming any oil, how is it burning it?

Is it possible the tune? to rich on start up?
When you cap off the pcv entired you usually get smoke from the vents...very annoying. What I did on my car was restrice the line going to the intake, I use a normal plug that you would use for capping a vacuum line, cut the end off slightly so there is a small hole in it...then slide it into the vacuum hose that you are using for the manifold, this restricts suction from the catch can, but still pulls a little bit of crankcase vapor to prevent to smoke, if you need to see pics I can post them up later of my setup
