Default ECU selection = crucial or no?

Hey guys sorry if this isn't in the ideal section, I couldn't decide if this q went best in here or PCM/tuning. Mods feel free to move it accordingly

So I'm still debating whether to just go with a run of the mill 5.3 or something a little more interesting like an LS2/etc in my 54. I already have a trans which is a 4L60E from an 04 Silverado and planning on running that for now with whatever engine I decide on. In any case, how mindful do I need to be about acquiring an ECU from the exact same year/model/etc that the motor came out of? Should I ideally try to find a 5.3L and ECU from right around 04ish just so that everything works together more or less plug and play? Or doesn't it really matter? It should be noted that I don't have tuning capabilities at the moment and trying to avoid having to pay mad loot to a shop to have them do it for me

Thanks in advance for thoughts
