Default MSD 6010 with LS2 cam sensor

I am trying to help a friend with a problem,he is running a carbed LS2 with a 6010 MSD igition box.The LS2 has the 24 tooth reluctor and he had to lengthen the cam sensor wires. Its hard to strat an pops back through the carb,Researched and found people reversing the tow outer terminals on the cam sensor to resolve this.I called MSD and they say to add a 1k 1/2 watt pull up resistor to each of the two wires that need to be reversed.Has anybody done this?? Part number or source for the resistors? I am going to check radio shack on hte way home.

All of these components were working perfectly on his LS1 prior to the swap

I've heard of the wire swap, but not the resistors...

I found this on MSD tech board a few minutes ago.Topic was MSD 6010 with front mounted cam sensor.rear type sensor is a 12v reference and the front type is a 5 volt reference sensor.

you will first need to extend the harness or purchase on from www.eficonnection.com pn 100-00562

if you make your own extension you will need to swap the 2 outside wires going into the cam sensor.

you will also need to install a 1K 1/2 watt resistor across those outside wires for both set ups..

hope this helps

I sort of went through this when I deleted the extension harness on my LS2. The cam sensor connections are reversed between the LS2 and LS1 sensor itself. They are clearly labeled inside the part. It is a pretty easy job to repin the connector on the MSD harness and use the smaller metric pac end off the end of the extension harness. When you are done you will have the orangish colored wire (the power wire) going to the top connection on the sensor itself.

I have the 6012 box so I didn't have to deal with a resistor. Can't help you there. Doesn't sound like it will be hard to do though.

I have done the same thing you are doing with the wire swap and resistor just the way MSD tech told me too and it worked perfectly.

the one thing i saw on your post was with the resistor. you need only 1 resistor and connect it between the to wires that you swap, not a resistor on both wires.

Have you confirmed that your cam gear is a 1x tooth ? Not a 4x ?

Great info guys!

My 5.3 with 24 tooth LS2 cam will work, but it is a bear to get started.

So two resistors or one? I am clear as mud on that part! LOL

Interesting that this isn't a more common issue.

Thanks!

The LS2 uses the 5v feed to power the cam and crank sensors. That is why they want you to add a resister to the cam sensor power wire. Also the power and signal wires are on opposite sides of the plug on the ls2 when compared to the ls1 cam sensor plug. I have attached the wiring diarams for a smart spark LS the first is the ls1 and the 2nd is the ls2 look at the plug labeled cmp on each and you will see the difference. I also know that the 12v ls1 sensors will work on 5v but I have not tested the 5v ls2 sensors using 12v, but most hall effect sensors have a range in operating voltage.

As stated by others, you need one resistor, which will bridge between the two wires that you switched around. Another important item: you also need a gto style timing chain set, with a 1x cam sensor raised area in the cam gear (looks like a half moon or smile), which your 5.3 may already have. I had to do this switch, and can supply pics if you want.

Thanks sooo much for the info guys!!! The PDFs are great!

I ended up just swapping the Pink and Brown/White wires. No resistor, so the LS2 cam sensor is seeing 12v. And it works great!!! Starts on the first crank.

Honestly IDK how it even worked before!

One of the GTO boards had a good write-up of the early LS2 cam gears and that is how I knew what to change out. Front cover I purchased off E-bay and the cam gear was actually correct from the '05 Avalanche 5.3 donor motor LM7 cam. Plus E-bay new extension wiring harness for the relocated front mount sensor.

Honestly for my needs, I probably should have dialed it back for a normal LS1 cam. My truck will very rarely see 6k on the tach.
