Default Can anyone make power steering line?

What's up guys...you can tell by the title that I need a power steering pressure line for my 5.3/4speed 81 camaro...the power steering pump is Cadillac escalade so the line is just straight line with a 90 for the pump...

If anyone out there is interested in the business let me know by email wildcamaro@yahoo.com thanks

You can buy a length of steel tubing from most auto parts stores with the correct PS pump fitting on it. Bend it and cut it however you like. Then take that steel line and your old hose to a hydraulic hose place (ex: Parker store, Aeroquip store, etc) and they will put the two together for you. I highly suggest a Parker store - in my experience they seem to consistently be the best.

I know I can get it made in town for 60 bucks I was just looking for a cheaper route and since I work part time at the zone I can see if I can make the line myself...I did get lucky on the 81 metric steering gear just tryin to find a way to save a buck...I am trying to keep my project under 4 stacks so anywhere money can be saved even 20 bucks I'm all for it...thanks for the help though guys

Ps the line would be easy to make since its a 90 the basically 18-22 inches and straight into Pump, it is nice being able to choose either return hose since it has an extra one for hydroboost...

Russell has high pressure hose and fittings to make your own. I made my pressure line and it's held up perfect for the last 4-5 months I've been driving. For everything I needed, cost me about $30

Have you tried a stock 5.3 or 81 camaro hose? Both of those should be under $20.
Also use the lower port for the return. The upper will airate the fluid making the pump noisy.

When I took my old hose and new steel line to the Parker store, they charged me $8.xx to put the two together.

Also, the pressure-side hose (which is what I assume you're trying to make) is a serious hose. Instead of running about 60 psi like your fuel lines, PS pumps often go up to about 1,700 psi - so the line needs to be pretty tough, too!

Last, remember that the hose does not twist - it is lined with steel. If you take it to a Parker store, they will probably put a flare & flare nut on the steel line, and crimp a flare fitting onto the other side. This will allow you to rotate the hose on the line, so you can "clock" it when you install it.

Also, this is all just for the pressure line. The return line is relatively low pressure. You should be able to use the old one and some good hose clamps.

Eaton has the hoses & fittings so that you can make your own custom hoses. Mine have performed well for 2 years, so far.

Anyone else have any luck with AN power steering PRESSURE lines? I have heard of people having them blow apart...

GMag what size line did you use for the pressure line? Isn't it 5/8?

Here's the page for the hose.... It's -AN 6
http://aeroquip.cc/aeroquippowerstee...rehosefbg.aspx
FBG0600 / FCG0606 - 6 Ft. Length 1 @ $27.59 $27.59

FBM1389 / FCM1389 - Fits Hose Size -06 (Thread Size 9/16-18) 3 @ $9.81 $29.43
FCM2964 / FBM2964 (-06 x 5/8-18) 1 @ $6.68 $6.68
FCM2965 / FBM2965 (-06 x 11/16-18) 1 @ $7.24 $7.24
FCM2608 / FBM2608 (-06 x M16x1.5) 1 @ $7.69 $7.69

This is what I bought^^^includes almost all the fittings & the hose, which is -an 6.
Keep in mind that the connection at the low press side of the pump must be completed separately. That is, bec the hose is stiff, you won't be able to slide loose hose over the nipple, & then use a hose clamp to secure that. I bought 2 fittings to bridge the Aeroquip hose to a short piece of heater hose, >>pump. FRA-484106 1 HOSE BARB &
RUS-641300 1 ADAPTER
Instead of using the high pressure hose & fittings for the low pressure side, you could just reuse your stock low press hose with an adapter at the steer box.

Someone here had used a Swagelok compression fitting to bridge the Aero hose to the pump nipple. You would have to cut the flare off of the nipple to make this fit.
I found that the compression of the pump nipple caused it to leak.>> Part Number: SS-600-6-6AN
Description: AN UNION 3/8T X 3/8AN
Quantity: 1
Unit Price: 13.80

The prices may have changed, being that 3 years have gone by.

I also read of someone whose hose separated from the fitting...twice.
My thought is that the fitting was not completely inserted within the hose, or not installed correctly.
That hose & fitting is super-tight. I don't understand how it could ever come apart.

The hose is rated conservatively at 2250lbs.
I was told by Aeroquip that the properly applied fittings are stronger than this.
In any event, no problems with mine.

As an update I went the cheap route and bought a factory power steering pressure line from the zone for 15 bucks for an 81 camaro 5.7...

The only difference is the line is for a pump with the pressure side on the back of pump, whereas mine enters on the front of pump...so I screwed in the steering gear side, set pulley on shaft and gently "massaged" the pump side in to place without heat or kinks...bingo problem solved for a quarter of my original quote for custom line although the aero quip stuff does look really nice
