Default Long Crank/Short Crank Questions

I'm planning on swapping a 4.8/5.3 into my LT1 car but want to keep the 6 speed. I know that I have to make some changes to the trans, but thats not what I'm worried about.

I keep reading about the truck motors having a long crank and that you can't run a M6 with them. Is there any truth to this and is there any way to tell before I drop some money on a motor that I may not be able to use.

Thanks in advance

The only motors with a long crank are the LQ4 6.0L used from 99-2000. That's it.

But still in doubt look at the crank flange. The short crank motors will be flush with the rear cover and the long ones will stick out from the back cover about .5'' or less.

Plus the 99-00 6.0s have iron heads so it's easy to tell.

Contact Jason @ TDP and he can give you all the details of what is necessary to make it work.

Usually those years with iron heads are cheaper also. I found a few and skipped them

If you're thinking about keeping the LT1 trans and using with an LS series motor, do search. Most agree, it's not worth the effort. Just buy an LS T56.

I'm planning on sending my LT1 trans to TDP and exchanging it for a built LS1 trans. Then getting a scatter proof bellhousing and what ever clutch will hold the power. But changing the input shaft and cover doesn't seem to be that big of a deal.

Or I may just buy a trans from him outright and keep my old motor and trans together. But that depends on how much $$$ I have at the time haha

Do these 6.0s with the longer crank use a different starter?

No. The flexplate ring-gear is positioned the same, and is the same size. Starter selection is not impacted.
