55 Fairlane Dilemma

55 Fairlane Dilemma
Long story short:
I am embarking on my first real hot rod project (55 Fairlane).
Several of my friends from a different universe are telling me to stop pursuing the 408 (stroked 351w) SBF and go the LSx route.
Couple questions if anyone can chime in:
What's the torque and power curve look like on a LS platform at 500hp/500 ft/lbs?
Any idea of the fitment issues I'll have with a 50's Ford and an LS?
Price estimates? The 408 route plus transmission will easily be over 10 grand, hence my buddies are claiming the LS with transmission (4L80E) would be MUCH cheaper and reach my goals.
Goals:
Reliable
500/500 and not have to rev to 7000 to see even close to that.
Not require me to refabricate the entire car to fit the engine and tranny.
Price: Up in the air, however I don't see this being a "smart" endeavor if it's going to be north of $10,000.00 as the SBF meets these goals with less headache (i.e. no fitment issues and I was thinking of NA carb for ease of install and tuning).
Thoughts? I need some advice.
