my first budget ls build
Found my junker at a swap meet for 1500 bucks. 1976 datsun 280z full cage weld wheels ladder bar set up 9" set up with all the best after market axles and all. So i buy it and have no clue what im gonna put in it. Well after some peer pressure i get talked into putting a 5.3 ls in. Being a budget build i just wanted to see how fast i could go cheapest way possible. Well I am now at 4000 bucks total on the whole build. Stock 5.3 only change made was a 585 lift cam and tooleys valve spring. Homegrown wiring harness stock ecm tuned by daffronraceinnovations. stock 28lb injectors of a e85 yukon. stock ls1 intake and buddy of mine shannon medley set me up with a slick dry nitrous kit. Powerglide trans tci convertor 3.50 gear. weighed the car with me in it and it weighed 2910. Im thinking at this point it wasnt going to run that good. WEll of course it didnt ran it on the motor ran an embarrising 8.74 @83 mph 2.08 60ft. Im like dang at this point lol. So we turn the bottle on and managed on 175 shot a 6.48. I was stunned. Then cranked the nitrous up to a 230 shot and went 1.35 60ft 6.11@111.41. car has impressed us all for sure. Running a drag radial race this weekend with a gear change to a 4.10 gear hoping for that first 5second pass.

Great numbers there on spray !!!! I could tell right away where this thread
was going after you mentioned spray and a somewhat disappointing number
on NA power. I would definitely NOT change that rear gear. The reason you
had sluggish NA numbers is the fact that the car is undergeared. Then when
you hit it with the 230 shot increasing torque by at least 300 ft./lbs your see
ing that the 3.50 gear is the right one for the spray. On NA the car will pick
up with the 4.11 but you'll have to lower your shift points on the spray to
keep the engine in it's torque band and not over rev it through the lights. I'd
try gettin' another hundred pounds out of the car and you'll get that 5.xx
Not sure what tire you're using but drag slicks grow (circumferentially) as
you go faster down the track and this lowers your gear ratio. Lets say your
cam runs out to 67-6800 but your seeing 63-6500 through the lights.....you
could try a drag radial which stays tight (doesn't grow) and this could put
put you right on max rpm through the lights. Alternatively you could also just
up the pill a tad but I'd suggest a widened primary compression ring gap
when approaching 300 on a stock 5.3 so you don't end up breaking piston
pieces off....ouch....GL2YA

gearing
i just changed to a 4.10 gear today. Its was still rather slugish on the spray even tho it still ran low 6s with mid 130 60ft. at 112 mph i was turning 4800 through the traps. car has a super tight convertor as well 585 lift cam

I know this may not be the proper part of the forum being new on here, but does anyone how much more fabrication is needed if there is already a SBC in a 280z, to fit a LS motor or will it not be worth it? I'm lookin into gettin a 280, and its got a T5 and a SBc, I don't know what it specifically, but T5s aren't always the greatest trannys...
