Default Planning to attempt a ranger swap, which motor fits?

I have a 94 ranger 4x4 that i am wanting to be a lsx of some sort in. i am leaning twds the 4.8 as they are dirt cheap and can make plenty of power. my question is which ls is the skinniest WITH headers on? the reason i ask is i live in ca and need it to be smog legal and have the ability to be bar'd. the biggest problem i see is getting the motor to fit with stock headers. curious to know what the skinniest lsx is and which STOCK headers would fit it that would be the best option? i am still in the planning stages at this point. would probably be a year before the swap starts, but i am compiling parts now. just need to figure out what motor to go with.

thanks for help!

Others can correct me if I'm wrong but all LS motors should have the same external dimensions. Part of what makes the swap so common is that interchangeability of parts.

As for stock manifolds either cast truck manifolds or LS7 will probably give you the most narrow profile.
