Default LM7 Starter question

I'm trying to order a new starter for my 2002 LM7. I keep getting two listings, one for "internal through bolts inside field case" and one for "external through bolts outside field case". I see no difference in the pictures listed and google seems to be of no help. Are they interchangeable? Is there something I can check on my current starter?

Some truck motors came with a starter that had 1 long bolt and 1 short bolt that mounts the starter to the engine block. Others came with 2 long bolts that mounts the starter to the engine block

All the stock photos show two long bolts.

Mine has external bolts holding the case together and two long bolts holding the starter to the engine.

The main battery wire was loose, so I may not need to replace it yet.

What they are referring to is the bolts that hold the back of the main starter housing to the gear head...

on one model they are outside that housing, and on another model they are INSIDE the housing...

The one with the bolts outside the main motor is a tad bit smaller that the one with the bolts inside....

Either one should work just fine for you since there is no distinction in the description of different tooth requirements..

You picked a hell of an item to replace also, NAPAONLINE shows them at the cheapest of $159 plus core prices ranging from $31.25 to $74+

So make sure you take your old one with you. Most places will test it for free if they have a starter tester. If it is just your solenoid that is bad, you can get away with replacing just that, but usually it is better to just replace the whole starter at one shot.

Rock auto has new Delco units for 135 and new Remys for 115.

The Delco listing shows the internal bolt model as pulling 1.7 KW, but only 1.4KW for the external one. Maybe the internal style is a little more powerful.

just a little bit more powerful but it also has a larger diameter motor inside the housing as well. As I said, either one will work just fine for you so long as you don't have any super thumper cam shaft and big bore long stroke setup that has 13:1 compression or something insane...

grab ya one up and go from there.

I bought my acdelco camaro starter for my 5.3l from amazon for about $125 shipped. No core fees.

But you have to buy the two long bolts seperate, and the post for the typical purple starter wire isn't there, you have to buy the pigtail and wire then solder or crimp the purple starter wire to the pigtail.

You are confusing a Camaro with a Yukon....

That information is unnecessary for this posting. If he runs into that problem, then he will need that info, but I don't see him doing that if he gets the starter for his vehicle model.

I'm using a LS3(2010+ camaro starter) that uses the two long mounting bolts on my 04' 5.3l engine.

I posted a link in this thread, post #4 with all the info needed. It will work on his motor

My original question was about starter compatibility, so LS3 parts are relevant.

I already have a long bolt starter. Are they the same bolts?

I think the two bolts were m10x1.5x113mm or 114mm something along that length. So they should both work fine, measure length of yours to be sure.

If the bolts will work then you would just need the starter, and pigtail. Parts numbers for both are in the link above.

For anyone looking in the future, the internal and external bolt styles are interchangeable.

I ended up going with a cheapy from rock auto: TYC # 106489 ($65 brand new). My old starter had the external case bolts, the new one did not. It swapped in without any issue, though the larger case was a pain to slip past my exhaust.
